Default softail front end on fxr

hello group, i have a 1984 fxrs. i would like to install a softail front end on it, are there any drawbackS to doing this?? i think the forks are 2 1/2 in longer. does that effect handling/manuvering in any waY? . what about the differance in neck rake between the fxr and softail, will that make the neck height higher with a softail front end?? i would like the bike to sit at the samew level as it does now..... my headlight is currently top mounted with all the wiring inside the shell. what do you do with all the wiring when you install a bottom mount headlight??? hate to sound like i dont know what i am doing , but i dont really want to sacrafice handling for looks............... any help would be great ... before i make a mistake ...........thanks all in aadvance.......

Why ,if you dont want to sacrifice performance, change the geometry with a different fork?
I also have an 84 FXR that started as an FXRP.
I have the dual 11 1/2" front disc's with the longer forks.Handling is great and I'm happy with it.Ive changed the fork seals and oil a few times.
I'm not sure your reasons for the change.............If you could post a reason perhaps we could give you better advice...

You will be replacing the entire front end since you have a 35 mm fork tube set and the softails have 39 or 41 mm units. Expensive. I have an 84 FXRSP with a FXRT front end (dual discs) which is 2 inches over stock in length. The handling is excellent. It would be a cheaper route for you to go and would be more in line with the weight of your scoot. The softail is a heavier (not by much) bike and you might sit a little higher than you'd like because of the springs. Using the FXRT forks all you need is a hunk of PVC pipe cut to 2 inches to sit on top of each spring to make up the travel difference and you keep the same springs you have now. Of course, they would be 35 mm tubes and sliders. But, you could also mount an extra rotor and caliper which make for a huge difference in the ability to stop the bike.

I had an occasion to replace my entire front end in 2003 because of an accident and I know the part numbers are valid.
ITEM QUAN PRICE/TOTAL PART#
RIGHT FORK SLIDER (1) $140.00 45909-83
LEFT FORK SLIDER (1) $140.00 45912-84
RIGHT AXLE HOLDER (1) $15.00 45994-84
LEFT AXLE HOLDER (1) $17.00 45410-84
FORK OIL SEAL (2) $14.40 45387-83
FRONT FORK TUBE (2) $138.00 45392-83

Prices are total cost for quanties listed.

Hope this helps.
