Ive just read on this forum that someone has had an inner primary bearing failure at 8000 miles on an 06 Dyna. Someone else has had a starter motor burn out. Im not trying to knock the new Dyna, I have one myself and couldnt be more happy with it, I believe that the new dyna line is great. But i was wondering about other peoples experiences, good or bad. As everyone knows, its a new model and as such, there will be teething problems, and as long as problems get sorted, that should be ok. It would be interesting to get an overall picture of how its shaping up. In the interests of accuracy, please only describe your own experiences, and not those heard about from a friend,or a friend of a friend etc.
i dont have 8k miles on mine yet, but i can tell you that so far i have not had any problems with mine at all. (knock on wood). i punched out my baffles (the discs 1/2 way down the pipes), put in a PCIII and a high flow A/C and it runs great. there is other info on some bearings in other posts, like changing out some xmission bearing a 15k, but far as i know the HD company has looked at alot of bearings and they decided they dont need to change them. my .03 cents worth.
One person on this forum had a problem with the bearing so far...but it's very hard to tell how many haven't had any. Harley sent me a letter not too long ago (as well as probably everyone with a new 06 dyna) stating that test results have shown the bearing not to be an issue and will not need replacement at 15K miles. So while I certainly feel bad for anyone who has had this problem, I would imagine that they are in the minority. Yes...new models do tend to have teething problems...but usually teething problems result in many more complaints.
For example...I own a Nissan 350Z. From day one, new owners started complaining about a "tire roar" after about 10 - 12K miles. As it turned out, there was a problem with the allignment right out of the factory, and the front tires were wearing unevenly causing this roaring noise. And in this case, the message boards were filled with people who had this problem...not one or two. Eventually, even I had the problem...and my car is one model year newer. The difference is, at least HD acknowledged there is potential for a problem. Nissan wouldn't even admit there was a problem until 3 years after it's first 350Z was built.
I guess what I'm saying is, these message boards are a good indicator of how many individuals are actually having problems with one particular thing. So far this was the first complaint about a problem with the inner primary bearing. That's a pretty good track record so far.
Just my opinion.
Everything running fine until after the 1000 mile service.
The transmission started clunking into first and clunking when down shifting. I questioned the dealer about the oil type used in the primary and was told 'Formula +' but being the untrusting soul that I am, I bought some anyway.
At 2,300 miles, I drained out almost 1 litre of oil (surprising considering it is only supposed to hold 0.9 litres) and it looked pretty thick and murky.
Refilled with new oil and after a few miles to get it worked in, the gear change is buttery smooth again with only an occosional slight clunk into first.
Now I can't say whether the oil was right or wrong except that it seemed to pour more thickly than the stuff I put in but there was too much alright.
The bike itself is better than I could have wished for and it still has the 8 degree injectors.
(Do we have to have a dealer service to retain warranty???)
The person claiming to have a bearing failure at 8000 miles made that claim in his first post here, and his profile was totally empty. Not saying it isn't true.. just saying, there are a bunch of us who've been posting here a long time and who own new Dynas... I'll believe there is a bearing prob when I see someone I know make the claim.
I pretty much agree with Jamie,...... most of the problems that I have heard of on here are very minor things. That was the first I had heard of that had a bearing failures from anyone on here.
yeoh, road captain. its not a claim bike bike is at the dealer waiting for the f&*king bearing to coome in. thanks for the superior aditude i won't be posting again.
The inner primary bearing issue, might have been on a bike that had the tranny recall work done. If the shaft nut was not torqued properly, it woul cause premature wear of the bearing.
