I bought a used SG seat on eBay. The tab where the pillion connects to the rider's seat was cracked. I checked out an 06 at the dealer and it was cracked worst than mine. Here's my fix.
I laid a clear piece of plastic on the pillion tab and used a marker to outline it. I cut out the pattern and traced around it. The white plastic is from a cat liter bucket and the metal is a car tag. I sandwiched the pillion tab between the plactic and metal. Drilled holes and riveted. Had to slide a trimmed piece of 1x2 between the metal and the seat foam to drill through the metal. The tab may not have needed both plastic and metal to be reinforced, but it is much stronger that stock. I will use foam tape on the seat bottom to protect the fender paint.
Pics of my project 07 Street Bob are in my Album.
Wow! Great job! Just what I wanted to see. I've always worried about that plastic connection on the pillion and just wasn't sure how I could reinforce it so I didn't have to wory as much about it. This is the fix. Good job man! Thanks!
I bought the seat to take to a custom seat shop in Fayetteville. Tom will use the stock seat pan and customize the seat for the rider. I didn't want to spend seat money on a cracked pan, so I decided to see if the tab could be reinforced. I think I succeeded. I just took time but no money.
