This was just one of the worst motorcycle experiences I have ever had !!!!
I spent the past three hours removing the rear axle from my '07 Wide Glide ! Why in the name of everything that's decent in the world is it so f'ing tight !!!!! ? And why did they put it in so you have to remove the exhaust, or drop the swing arm to remove it ? I swear to god, any one of us could do a better job as an engineer at H.D. than these dopes ! ....... rant over
I guess you had trouble knocking the axle out because the MoCo is too cheap to put a nickel's worth of grease or anti-seize on the axle. Common compaint.
Not familiar with an '07, but on earlier bike you could put the axle in the opposite way to make pulling it easier. If you put your axle in backwards, next time you won't have to pull the exhaust, because you will only have to take the nut off on the right side.

Right on brother ! All ready said to my self, that I was going to do that.
Also, when I got it apart... I noticed the axle, and the hub i.d. are both "rough" looking. Apparently from the pounding the axle got. How should I remedy this ?

use a round rat-tail file or a radius file and just remove the burrs off, dont file alot just remove the burrs. then lube it up with anti-sieze and slap her back together. jackyl

I bought into this myth and reversed the axle when I was putting on my new Supermeg. When I put it all back together I realized that I'd still need to pull the muffler to get enough clearance to get a socket over the axle nut. Next time I pull the rear wheel for a tire change I'm gonna put the axle back through the left side.
As for getting the axle out - it was kind of tricky getting the rear tire supported just right to eliminate both downward and upward force on the axle. Just the weight of the wheel and tire on the axle make it a bear to pull it.
Wouldn't an open end wrench fit? A socket isn't really necessary for one axle nut is it?

I feel your pain, I have removed my shock bolts (to drop the swing arm) so many times now that I have stripped the bolt and had to replace it. Also on the c-clip that insures the axel nut doesn't back off the groove on the axel bolt needs to be cleaned out, the best way I have found to do this is by useing a hacksaw and cutting the mushroomed metal out of the groove.

That's what I use, an open end wrench. Haven't had an issue yet. Mine was actually installed with the nut on the right from the moco.
I am going on my 5th tire I never put the axle in the other way cause I was worried about it causing the nut to come loose or something lol well I am going to reverse it when my new sprocket comes in tomorrow.
the first time I removed it I had a hell of a time getting the axle out and like said in posts above use anti-seize. it comes out much easier now.
