It seems like one of the first things that people need to do on a new HD is pull the rear axle and coat it with anti-seize. The longer you wait the worse it is. I managed to get mine out the first time with a brass drift and hammer. Others have all but ruined the axle trying to get it to come out. I guess making it kind of difficult to service the rear wheel and axle helps keep the HD service dept. busy.

sheesh - I just completed first tire replacement on my '07 (the Metzlers rock!!!!!!) - I had to beat on the axle with a dead blow so hard I thought I was going to knock the bike of the jack. I wound up using a three pound sledge and it finally came out. What is up with the H-D assembly line???? How about some freakin' anti-seize. The front was pretty dry, too. When I re-assembled I used plenty of permatex anti-seize. Also, with my Reinhart exhaust there is no problem with access to the axle nut as it is shorter than the stock exhaust.

[quote=gregbenner;5476802]Wouldn't an open end wrench fit? A socket isn't really necessary for one axle nut is it?

An open end would work great for loosening the nut but since there is not cotter pin through the nut I make sure to torque it to spec (100 ft-lbs). Plus I like to use my impact wrench to loosen the nut.

Not familiar with an '07, but on earlier bike you could put the axle in the opposite way to make pulling it easier. If you put your axle in backwards, next time you won't have to pull the exhaust, because you will only have to take the nut off on the right side.
+1 also check the bearings if you had to beat on it When you reassemble coat good with anti sieze and you wont have that problem next time

When you reassemble, put it in the other way...this way you can pull it out without it hitting the exhaust. It would now come out on the left side of the bike. Comprende' compadre?

I've been following this thread and wonder... if you change it over so the bolt is on the side with the pipes, how do you get a torque wrench on it? Sounds like it should go in the way it came out.

I haven't done it yet... I'm just sayin'...

If you're worried about torque specs, just add 10 percent when torqueing from the bolt

Get some 180 crocus cloth and buff up the axle till it is smooth again, then, cover the shaft with anti-seize and slide it back in. Next time it will come out easily. Oh, and I put my axle in the opposite way and it works fine, I now have 91k on mine and have changed lots of tires so it must work!!!
