07'Deluxe. Removing rear wheel. Stock exhausts. TOP muffler in the way of axle. What is easier:
1. removing top muffler from header pipe (it;s like pulling teeth)
2. just lossen headers from jug ports enough to sneak axle through
3. remove complete exhaust system from jug ports?
If you axle is that hard to get out it might be rusted to your bearings. It should slide right out. When you put it back in put it in backwards so you do not have to remove the exhaust next time. Make sure you release the axle alignment bolts or the axle will go nowhere sir. Also, coat the axle with a thin coat of anti seize before reinstalling.

Dr V-Twin thankx. I figured the right axle adjuster really does not touch the colar or axle. But will backoff as you suggest. Yeah, that's funny, I was thinking the same on reversing the axle.
So, I won't damage anything if I whle on the axle with my sledge?

I don't know. As long as the axle is still straight. When mine rusted I hit it with a hammer until it came out. The prupose of the axle adjusters is to hold the axle straight.
Thanks for this post RONYD. I learned a few things here. I'm not going to let the dealership do my rear tire/brakes anymore. Good time to take care and lube things the right way, clean areas that can't be accessed normally and inspect things like brakes etc.
