I finally got all the parts and I'm hoping to get around to installing a mini tach on my '08 Fat Bob sometime this week. I have the silver face mini-tach (68986-04), bracket (67268-06B), and housing (67523-04). I was browsing through a few other threads and the instruction sheet, and have a question I'm hoping someone can help with. I know I need to run the pink signal lead to cavity #3 on the ECM. Does anyone know what kind of connector I need on the signal lead?
The attached pic shows the tach wiring harness as-is (from the kit) with what appears to be a "PACKARD MICRO 64" connector. Is this the right one? I'm hoping someone can confirm so I can make this a quick install and not lose much riding time.
FYI, I did a search and came across the link below. He used connector #72076-00 at the ECM, which appears to be different than the one attached to the signal lead in the kit I have.
One thing that I forgot to mention... (very minor)
the black sleeve around the pink wire slides back and forth pretty easy. A few months after installing mine I took the wind shield off and noticed that the sleeve over the pink wire had slid down during installation, exposing the pink wire and the top opening of the sleeve.
The top of the sleeve should be pulled up and inside the bigger sleeve that goes into the tach, otherwise water could get into the top of the sleeve and flow all the way down into the ECM.
Just mentioning it because I never even thought about it while running the cable. The wind shield blocked the view so I never saw it. Make sure it's all snug in the tach sleeve before tie wrapping it down.
Thanks guys... looks like I have the right connector already on the harness. I didn't want to lose a day of riding by running into any surprises during the install.
I did this mod last week. Could not find a silver face so I used a black face (68953-04) with the older style mount which I liked better (67268-06A) and the tapered housing (51676-97A). I thought the signal lead pin in the kit was too small, perhaps designed for the speedo connector, so I cut it off and replaced it with the part number mentioned, which is the same size as the others in the ECU connector. Pulling a wire attached to the connector pin through the ECU connector is easier than trying to push one through from the back side. I haven't had a chance to take photos yet.
