Default Question about wheel finish

I have an 06 FXD with the silver 10 spoke wheel. Is there any clear coat on these wheels? They are very dirty to the point that soap and water aren't doing the job. I was going to use fine steel wool if they are bare aluminum. I am open to suggestions though.

The bright aluminum is polished with no coating, I've used Mother's Aluminum/Mag Polish and seems to help out. I wash them with "Shout "laundry cleaner, it's real easy on the aluminum. Welcome to the forum.

Thanks, I think they need a little more than just polish. They have some surface oxydation. I tried the polish and it helped, but its not perfect so im going to give the "0000" steel wool a try. I just wasnt sure if there was any clearcoat on them. It didn't seem so.

I used a dremel, a bunch of wet sanding, and a buffer. Cleaned the wheels right up

Those wheels haven't been on the beaches of Daytona or New Smyrna have they? Good luck with them.

I wish I could say it was from the beach but it's not. I just got this bike and it's been sitting in a carport for 3 years. It's an 06 with less than 1000 miles on it. I've been working on it with the fine steel wool and it's turning out great.

A good chroming does wonders and makes them easier to keep clean.

try a little paint thinner on the oxidized spot-if it bubbles or comes off then you have a clear coat on them--if not then they are anodized--Harley Davidson told me so--to clean them first try a clay bar and then use the mothers mini ball with a metal polish --not chrome polish--a real good polish is optimum metal polish--personally I like the idea that buddie gave about having them chrome plated
