I live like 2 blocks from the beach - and I can't get rid of the rust - tried steel wool, chemicals, wax protectorant... hate em. anyway, was thinking about painting them black - but leaving the chrome on the outside of the wheel. Never seen this done? how would I do it? or better yet, could/should I do it? are there any considerations? I was planning on buying a new wheel eventually when i had like an extra couple grand (never) - but I think black spokes would be alright.
would they hold up? would I have to do it every year or so? please give me advice on this.

Even the Super Glide mags will oxidize in the salty air because they are not clear coated. Best bet is to go with SS spokes or a set of mags that have a good finish or clear coated. Sucks, no matter what, you are going to have to keep up on the cleaning!

so are u saying that if I paint em black and use a clear coat - they will still rust? I just want to paint em black - and just have to wash em down with teh hose or something.
I don't live near the beach right now, but spoked wheels are hard to keep clean to begin with (in comparison to other wheels) so you have your work cut out for you. I decided to replace mine and have not looked back. You are right regarding the cost, but every time someone says the wheels look great the cost seems less and less
