My wife once asked me how to put air in her car tire with a one-way air nozzle. I knew then that I was going to be for one hell of a ride! Twenty-three years later and nothing much has changed. Still dumb as a rock!
The most effective way to check the oil is to loosen the filler, lay the bike over on the right side. If oil comes out, pick the bike up and ride. If no oil drips out, then I would imagine you need some.
One mistake I made when I first got the bike: not wiping the stick before checking oil level. I would check it first thing in the morning and it looked full because the oil clings to the cross hatching on the stick. If you turn the stick to the side you can see the actual level without wiping, but I usually wipe to be sure. Mine was almost to the add line before I discovered it.

Works on Sportsters and Softails too
My local dealer says this is incorrect!!! He says all you have to do to top off your oil is to remove the gas cap on the left side of the tank, he also says that this could be very hard to do, but a good yank should do the trick. Then he said all you have to do is poor your oil into that hole until it starts to over flow, this could take awhile, so be patient!
I refered to my owners manual to confirm this, the directions in it are just a little bit different.
All jokes aside, the best directions you have should be in your M.O.M. (motorcycle owner manual), this comes free with your bike (if it's new). Other wise invest in a service manual, money well sent!
I just checked the oil level in my wife's 06 Street Bob.
I rode it around the block to warm it up. Then with the bike on the jiffy stand, I cleaned off the dipstick and screwed it back in. Only the tip of the dipstick barely shows a little oil on it. That is WAY too low. How does that happen? There are no signs of an oil leak. The last owner had the 1000 mi service done, and we're only at 2,300mi. Its too soon for a regular oil change.
Do these bikes 'use' oil and require having to add more regularly?
do I put the kickstand or is it jiffy stand to check the transmission or do I level the bike and then check I cant find no one that knows how to check the oil in the motor or transmission or primary oil how do I find out to do this?

After a ride to get it to warmed up I let it idle for a minute. With the bike on level ground ( on kickstand) pull dipstick , clean dipstick , rediip dipstick, read dipstick. You need to get an owners manual and repair manual. At least get the owners manual.
