Default Barely Laid Down FXDC

So I was riding home on a dark corner and didn't expect the quick next corner. Drove into mud pretty slow as I braked but couldn't keep it straight up in the mud. Laid it over real slow on the left side.

Minor little dent on the gas tank. No visible damage anywhere else. Some dirt in the shock.

I was able to pick it up, no thanks to the wrecker driver who wouldn't help, talk to the cops then head on home. It drove fine but I didn't go above 50mph home. It seemed to me like it might have been shaking a little.

What can I expect to need to be fixed? Should I take it to the dealer to be inspected for damage? Do the handlebars bend easy? They look fine and don't appear to have shifted at all. Just looking for input. This is my first bike. Made it 2000 miles and 9 months without incident. Like the phrase about bikers who have and hadn't laid them down - at least I have it out of the way now. And glad to have been wearing my DOT helmet and Harley leather jacket.

My bike, yesterday:

You didnt really say how you fared in this ordeal. Are you OK?

Dont worry about the bike. thats what you have insurance for.
Wait for the morning to inspect the bike better when you have some daylight and a clear head.

well, i would rather pay out of pocket than deal with the insurance rates increasing...

my left ankle took alot of pressure, but i feel fine. about like getting thrown off a bull. i figure i was only going 10mph when it laid over... if that. just a real hard s curve that i thought was a c.

at least it was laid down in the mud/grass and not scraped up on the road. i just want to be good to go end of october for the big rally in galveston.

probably take it to a paintless dent repair place. the dent isn't too bad and no paint damage. i just want to know that my handlebars are good, forks are good, wheel, brakes, etc... but i know the dealership is going to tear me a new one to check it out.

Dont ya hate it when the road plays alphabet soup on ya?

Keep a close eye on the ankle, cause its gonna hurt more in the morning.

If you want to fix the bike yourself, then clean all the mud off, jack it up and give the wheels a spin. If they run true, set her down and deal with the cosmetics. The bike will take a pretty good beating at low speed before any major damage happens.

Was the turn not marked with a speedlimit sign or anything? If not, you may want to work through the process to get one up. Is this a road you had never traveled before?

From what you wrote sounds like the bike should be fine. They're pretty tough.

I'd clean off the mud and give it a good visual inspection. If everything looks ok take it for a ride (easy at first in case there is a problem) then if everything feels ok turn her loose and put on a few miles.

Understandable that you are a little shaken from this incident and glad to hear you are mainly ok with just some ankle soreness. Highly recommend getting an engine guard.....some like them and some don't. But an incident like you described would make you appreciate having one.

I laid my brand new Super Glide down at zero miles an hour in a gravel parking lot.

I stopped with the front wheel cocked a bit and it wasn't happy about that. My boot
slipped in the gravel as I tried to straighten it up and it was obvious that it was
going to lay itself down no matter how hard I tried to stop it so I stepped off and
eased it to the ground on its right side.

A couple very minor scratches on the newly installed engine guards and I had to
readjust the right side mirror. That was it.

The engine guards may look ugly, but they are beautiful when you need 'em..

I did the same thing on my 2009 FXDC at after putting 1500mi on it. But I went down on the left side on the pavement, only going 10 mph or so. I needed a new shift lever and clutch lever thou. The handle bars were off but not bent. Small dent on gas tank but only I can see it.

Harley charged me $70.00 to do a damage assesment. It's steep but I thought it was worth it as just for a piece of mind at least.
