Default Boss Bags - Lessons Learned

For a variety of good reason, I chose the Boss Bags for my new bike. Installation requires the turn signals to be moved (of course), and use of the docking hardware kit.

Some of you may already know, the '06 docking hardware is inexpensive at about $25, but has been on national back order for a couple of months. It took me 6 weeks to get the parts. However, now that I've installed mine I realize you really don't need it. Unless you really need the docking hardware for your sissy bar/luggage rack, you only use 2 parts out of the kit.

Frist, the inside fender support plate. You remove the stock piece and install the one from the hardware kit. The stock front bolt hole is threaded; the rear hole is not, and has a nut on the inside. On the new piece both holes are threaded. That's it; it's the only differance. 5 minutes with a 3/8" NC tap and some WD-40 and the two parts are exactly the same.

The second part you need is a cover plate to make the fender support look good. It's a thin piece of steel cut to the right shape with a hole in it. And it's poorly chrome plated. I have some scrap alum and steel around that I could have used to make a cover plate. A little shaping, and little polishing, a little powdercoating, and it's done. Or, a simple button head bolt through that hole would look just fine.

The rest of the docking hardware kit is not used at all for the Boss Bags. I spent $25 for two trim cover plates. Live and learn.

Which Boss bags did you buy? How do you like them? Didn't the bags come with the buttons to mount the bags? Is there any rubbing between the bags and the axle or brake? They sure look good in the ads but I don't know any one who has them.

They do come with the special hardware need for the mounts. But the web site and the instructions say you need the docking hardware kit from H-D. I've discovered that you don't.

I bought the big ones specificcaly for the new Dyna. #31 I think. They are quite large.

The fit is very good. There's no rubbing on the swingarm or brakes. But the bag comes very close to the exhaust pipe. Anything larger than a stock pipe could be a problem. Something like a D&D 2-1 pipe would never fit with these bags.

Included in the kit is a small roller bearing and a plate which gets bolted on the to bottom of the shock. On the back of the bag there's a plastic panel that rides on the roller bearing. It looks pretty clean with the bags removed.
