Default Dyna Decissions

New member - first post

Well I've made up my mind. I will be trading in my sporty. It's a great bike but I know I want a Dyna. I'm still trying to decide - Superglide, Superglide Custom, or Steet Bob. They all have things I like and dislike. I know that's a big part of ownership - making the bike my own but I want to start with good foundation. Here are a couple of questions - if I may.

I know you can buy just about everything you ever wanted in chrome and the FXDC has a lot of it but I just recently saw a softail "Crossbones" and I liked some of the polished aluminum pieces. I was trying to get an estimate of what it would cost me to switch out the FXD primary cover and probably the cam cover (maybe a couple other pieces). Any part numbers or ideas would help.

Also, one thing keeping me from the Street Bob is the handle bars. Althought I haven't riden one yet - I don't care for the feel. I was reading about the SB and the one piece riser / tree. Has anyone just bolted up different bars to the existing risers?

Any other thoughts or suggestions would be welcome. Thanks - Jimmie

I bought mine on eBay. here is a link from the outfit I bought mine from: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2006-...Q5fAccessories

Also check out Zannoti's if you want genuine HD stuff: http://www.zanottimotor.com/HarleyDavidson.html

Personally, I went with the Superglide because I like the speedometer where I can see it easily rather than on the tank. I also like the mag wheels over spokes, and I like the look of the gas cap.

Just regarding chrome cost, its cheaper to go with the FXDC than adding all the chrome pieces to an FXD.

My question here is have you sat on the WG or FB? Remember that all dyna frames and engines of like year are the same,it's just what you do with it.

This is coming from a Street Bob owner:

I went through the same thing.

FXD was out for me. My father had one (just traded it in) and unless you really like the way the speedo sits up like a sporty, there is not much you can do with it without costing a pretty penny. The lack of chrome, if that is your thing, is another bummer. It is a good base, but wasn't what I wanted...

The FXDC is a great buy. If you like chrome and the bob tank with speedo in the dash...you can't go wrong.

The street bob really hit home for me. I loved the flat, utility paint look and apes are just darn cool. I used to actually hate them, until I rode one. I find them very comfortable and loves the looks.

The new Wide Glide was mentioned. My father just bought one and I gotta say, I honestly think it's the best buy in the dyna line. The rack, 21" front wheel and low stance just give it a killer look! It is so close in price like the others, I would add it to my (your) list to check out. Especially if you dislike the Apes on the street bob, you get some of the similar features of the street bob with the wideglide with a better looking front end/wheel combo.

I plan to put a WG front end on mine, as well as a 21" front wheel. If I was buying new at this point, I would most likely buy the WG.

Pro & Cons to date (JMHO)

FXD - actually like the tank and the speedo (probably from my sportster). Hate the wheels. I'm back and forth on the chrome - that's why I'm looking into "polished aluminum" covers. Still having problems finding a good source. I noticed the Softail Crossbones" that I saw the polished covers on has a TC 96"B" motor. Would the covers be inter changable with the Dyna TC 96"A" motor?

FXDC - really favor this model. Lots of chrome and I showed my wife a picture of the two tone Black and Silver. That gets her vote. I'm just keeping my options open. By the way I actually like the 2009 silver motor vs. the 2010 black motor.

FXSB - I saw it today with the vivid black paint. Thats actually what caught my eye. The popular demin finish - not for me.

FXWG - love the feel, love the forward controls. Suspect about the 21" tire and front rake - handling. Hate the pipes.

FXFB - like the front end. Don't care for the rear fender.

Now that I've given my opinion to a bunch of riders that already have their bikes ..... which I can't help because I love to here what you think about your bikes and in some causes what you don't like about them.

I'm still looking for "Polished Aluminum" covers. I went to the site posted above and all I saw was Chrome, Chrome, and more Chrome. I thought I saw a earlier model Dyna (2006 ???) with polish covers but will they fit the 2009 - 2010's ?????

Knowing that I could change out the flat gray with polished covers could push me toward a simple FXD - sometimes less is more.

Thanks for the input - hope to get some more.

Pretty sure the covers are aluminum, so you can polish off the grey powder coating and get the polished aluminum effect your after. Keep in mind, LOTS of maintaining with polishing aluminum compared to chrome. You can have clear sprayed over aluminum to preserve the look better, but it will get chips.

BTW, the WG handles wonderfully. It actually feels more smooth than my Street bob, and I feel that is due to the longer wheelbase.

If you aren't happy with the chrome, you can always buy the FXDC, and swap someone for their factory covers and still get that two-tone paint you and your wife both like. (just a thought cause I want chrome for mine!)

Not true about all Dyna frames of like years being the same. From the Harley-Davidson University Technical Forum (2006 Model Year):

"FXDWGI model has 34 degree neck angle"
"FXDI/C/L/B/35 models have 29 degree neck angle"

Polished covers are gonna mean doing it yourself. Mud (moderator) stripped and polished his and has posted about it. I put polished covers on mine, but it's an '05 so some '01 covers fit (FXDs had polished covers back then). But even those took some work to get right. You won't likely find any to fit a new Dyna, so get ready for some elbow grease.
