I have been reading around about doing the cams myself. I wanted make sure Im not in over my head. What tools will I need to get. an is it cost afective are just get the INDY to do it for 300.00
We put a set in my Ultra a couple weeks ago and am putting the 103 piston/cylinder kit in this weekend. After seeing/helping with it I think I could probably do most of the work but there are alot of steps. We had to use a press to put the bearings on the cams which would have been near impossible without a press.
In a couple of weeks we will be tearing my fatbob apart to put a 107 kit in it with cams and I am debating on whether to try to do it myself. With a service manual you should be ok if you have mechanical abilities.
The only special tools I saw was a gauge to check crank runout(gear drive cams) and a tool to take the covers off of the pushrods. Everything else for the cams was fairly standard stuff.
If you have no intention of changing the inner cam bearings, then you'll save the better portion of that 300 bucks in labor if you do it yourself.
If you plan on doing it right, then the cost of the tools will be close to the labor charge. The nice part about doing it yourself, no matter which way you go, is the satisfaction of knowing you did it.

That different then. If you have a manual AND you have some skills And you wanna cut out the old push rods and replace with adjustable ones, it's easy. You'll need a cam locking tool, $40.00 from Georges Garage. If you plan to use the same pushrods, a different story as you have to pull the rockers off.
I'm a pretty big fan of doing it yourself. Even if you have to buy some tools, and the cost worked out the same as having the indy do the work...
you learn about your bike, you learn a new skill and gain the tools to do it again. Say you want a different set of cams down the road..easy as pie then. Or..you buddy needs some help with his.
