Just got the service manual and parts manual in hand,
but don't see any thing about tools need and bolts/socket size!
I need to get tools to start my own work on the bike, where/how can I get the correct size of the bolts?
Example: I was trying to remove the air cleaner, then I discover I don't have the big allen wrench for that, and don't know what size of the allen key should get for this?
ill save you some trouble. Get the big set of tools from craftsmen and get a set of allens and a set of torx sockets. you will need so many assorted tools it will be easier just to get a set. and dont think cause its "made in usa" that it doesnt have any metric bolts on it. main one is 10mm 12point socket. i mean if you get every tool you need to work on your bike youll be out alot of money!! ive spent over 8k in tools and still in need of alot more to get EVERYTHING i need.
Btw there isnt anything that tells you what size sockets, allens, torx you need. The parts manual tells you what length, thread size and pitch the bolt is but doesnt cover the head of the bolts.
A $200 set from sears and a torx set will give you enough
to do most of the basic stuff. Watch Sears sale flyers and you
can get some better deals .
If you spend close to that you'll have metric and Sae sockets
with allen wrenchs that should bet you by .
Be forewarned that tools are addictive!!!!!!!!!!!
A good set of Allenheads from 1/16" to 3/8" in 32nd Increments will cover Most of what you need on a Harley As Far as Torx go a good set that includes a T27 up to T50 will cover Most as well..
If you have pawn shops in your area, you can get a lot of tools relatively cheap. Just takes time going through the bins looking for that pin in the haystack.
Torque wrenches 2 of them.. Lbs & inlbs a must have..
Please dont go buy a harbor freight torque wrench. A good torque wrench is worth its weight in gold. Youll be cussing when you go to torque a bolt to 110in lbs and that cheapy overtorques it snaps the head off. I own all snap-on but craftsmen is almost as good. not a thing wrong with anything craftsmen.
One more thing. Matco has a whole section of tools that are Harley specific. go online and check out theyre catalog. A few well spent dollars on those will save you alot of time and frustration down the road when you do a job that requires one of them.
Hey...even a pro has to start somewhere...give the guy a break..he's trying..
I'm with 09fxdb,cut the guy some slack at least he's willing! @ dynafan68 A standard socket set, allen wrench and torx sets will take you a long way. I only have a ft/lb torque wrench. 120 inch lbs is 10 ft/lbs I did the math and i think that's how it works.. And I found that the jam nut on the clutch pack is a M17 bolt. M= metric. You'll need an angled one for that particular job.
