I have a full face for cold days, 1/2 for warmer days ... the 1/2 worked much better for the class as you do sit around a lot while waiting your turn, and hearing instructions is much easier. It was 90+ outside when I took the intermediate class.
Shoei RF-1000 I hate full face helmets but I bought this one here from a member for a good price.. now I wear it all the time. It just makes me feel safer..
Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Any opinions on the helmets HD sells at their stores/online? They had a modular one I saw online for around $250, but since it doesn't mention who actually manufactures the thing, I'm hesitant to even mess with it.
I'm due off deployment really soon, and have been looking at internet sites for ideas. When I finally get back to San Diego I'm going to take what I found online and go looking and trying on at some of the local Bike shops. I had looked at a Nolan N102 and Shoei RF-1000 and 1100 at BikeBandit. com, but so far that's been about it so far. But I'm still looking. I'll have about a month after we get back to get all my gear together before the class, and before I head back East to Florida. I'm likely going to just get a 3/4 for the class.
Make sure you go somewhere that you can try the helmet on. Each manufacturer has a different shape - what may fit me comfortably may be uncomfortable to you. The most important thing besides safety is comfort - if it's uncomfortable, you won't wear it, and if you don't wear it....... Anyway - a good resource is webbikeworld.com. There is a lot to consider besides price - fit/finish/ventilation/noise levels etc.

Good advise...I have a Bell Apex FF helmet for cold weather...it's comfy, but noisey as hell so I never wear it.
I recently purchased a HJC Sy Max II modular helmet for cold weather riding and I'm impressed with it. It's their newer updated version...the latches are stainless steel, it's well ventilated and not nearly as noisey as the Bell Apex. It also fits the shape of my head well and I like the internal drop down sun shade.
For a 3/4 helmet I couldn't resist and ordered the Fulmer V2 retro style Captian America helmet a few days ago....

The HD Modular helmet is an HJC SYSMAX II. But the HJC and save your money, stick a Harley D decal on it.
You don't NEED a full face helmet.....any lid will do but having one in your helmet arsenal is prolly a good idea. I have one; I hardly ever wear it but it is nice on those occasional long rides where rain is in the forecast........
What ever you buy make sure it will not move on your head, it needs to be tight and almost too tight at first. If you get one too tight wear a dew rag with it for a short time then get rid of the dew rag the helmet should be comfortable then. Good luck
