Default Oil....

.....Probably been done to death somewhere else on here, but can't seem to find any reference. As most of you will know I took delivery of my Dyna Glide yesterday. It's a 2002 model first registered in the UK in 2004. The dealer has changed the oils prior to me taking delivery, but this bike has done a mere 54 miles so is going to need all the oils changing again at 1000 miles (which won't take me very long to do). I do all my own servicing / repairs so I've been
checking up on specs etc

Reading through the owners manual I see that as an alternative to genuine Harley engine oil, Diesel oil up to CG rating can be used. I'm ok with that, but generally speaking, what do you fellas on here use for the engine - do you use Diesel spec oil or something else?

Also the manual is a bit vague regarding the primary / gearbox oils. In fact it doesn't even mention what grade / spec it is - just that genuine H.D brand oil should be used. All very well, but my nearest Harley dealer is miles away, but I can pick up good quality oils from the major manufacturers on my doorstep.

Can anyone fill me in on the grades etc. Thanks

Cheers
Dave

Congrats on the dyna, do a search on oil and you will have enough reading for days.

HD Formula + for primary and tranny. HD 360 20/50 for motor

You are about to be bombarded with info on this post, either that or no-one will answer because they have already answered soooo many times, but hey you'll get what you need I'm sure. Currently I run amsoil 20w50 full synthetic oil in the crank, same in the tranny ,but so far have stuck with hd formula++ for the primary as I heard the amsoil is too slippy for the clutch, even if it says good for all three holes on the bottle. Alot of people swear by tranny fluid in the clutch.

Right guys - done a search for oil and found a shed load of reading to keep me going for days. I don't want to be responsible for yet another mega post, oil thread so just thought I'd let you know I'm sorted now. I thought it was strange - every biker forum I've ever been on has the ubiquitous oil thread - nice to see you guys have the same.......makes me feel all warm and fluffy inside

I need a Clymer manual!

Well fantastic dude were all fuzzy over here too!

Sidenote; I can't speak from personal experience, but most guys here with alot of experience recommend the HD manual as reference as it has better, more complete info for you, despite the extra cost. Also well recommended is the parts manual for ordering what you need. So far i'm ok with just the manual, the local H-dealer is only 5 minutes from here.

Cheers and congrads man!

+1 on the harley manual, you spent the money on the bike, now spend a little on a service manual, it is well worth the cash.

Default Manuals

Forget the Clymer manual and go for the H-D manual that is specific to your particular bike. Money well spent.

I agree on the HD manual. Very detailed.

As for oil.

Amsoil 20w50 in the engine
Amsiol ATF in the primary
Amsoil 75w140 in the trans

You will read alot about primary leaks, trans seal leaks, and shifter shaft leaks on forums. If you run the same fluid in the trans and primary, it makes it harder to diagnose exactly what it leaking.

Welcome Derv and congrats on the new scoot! There's a section on HDF for oil specifics. Good info. I also concur with the HD manual. It's roughly 2x bigger than the Clymer manual, so that says something for it.

I personally use

Lucas 20/50 in the crank
Lucas 85/140 in the trans
Type F tranny fluid in the primary. I'm running a Barnett setup in there, and that's what they recommend.

Good luck with the new scoot and have fun!
