OK, I checked my exhaust flange, that's not it. Bummer!
Using a stethoscope, the sound is definately coming from the front cylinder. Actually it is loudest when on the front exhaust flange, but I put in a new gasket and re-torqued it, still squeaking. The sound is something like a squeaking belt on a car. It does not start as soon as the bike is started, but maybe 30 seconds after. I listened to the cam area and heard nothing, the sound definately comes from the top end of the front cylinder.
Anyone have any more ideas as to what the problem is?
I have the same type of noise that just appeared a couple of weeks ago. I'm gonna check my exhaust flange bolts as Jeff mentioned.
Hey Don, did you ever find the source of your squeek? I've developed a new squeek that isn't improved by tightening the exhaust, and that last explanation seems plausable. Now I'm wondering if this is something serious that might come under warranty, or just another HD quirk.
I ended up taking the bike to a reputable shop (Bachman's in Woodland) and he found that one of the rollers on a lifter had seized up and trashed the cam lobe. SO...new cams (woods), lifters (feuling), oil pump (feuling), cam support plate (feuling), and upgraded to the hydraulic tensioners. $2650.00 total but she really screams now!
yikes, im fearing the same, though maybe ill check the IPB first as mine is an 06 and it seems (without stethoscope) my noise is coming from low on the primary side - but a soft squeak sorta like a bird chirp :/
I had a bird chirping on my Triumph. The stealer could not find the problem (one of the reasons I traded it). Drove me crazy. Wish I had thought of the sounding stick.
OOPS!!! I got so chatting explaining the story, I forgot the info on my bike!
It's an '02 Dyna Wide Glide with the Screamin' Eagle Stage 3 package. Mileage is 22K. It does it regardless if the clutch is engaged or not, whether in gear or not, and at all ranges of speed/RPM.
I had a similar deal and it turned out to be the 3 bolts (torques) that hold the flange plate for the exhaust located directly under the cam cover and bolted to the case. one was broke but came out pretty easy and the other two were just partially loose
