I've been all through my manual, asked friends, and searched the internet, but I cannot figure out what this indicator means. I not asking the dealer because I don't want to be laughed out of the store!
My best guess is that it is a shift light...but I've never seen it come on even when I'm screaming down the road at 55 in third.

It's a red "X", that indicates there's no picture. Pretty common with most internet sites.
I can tell you there is no shift light to indicate when to shift, there is just a green light to indicate 6th , only when your in 6th. There is however a rev limiter that tells you shift or your gonna look like your riding a pogo stick from here on 'till you shift,it doesn't need a light.
Wow crap man! I just looked at mine and never noticed it before! Maybe it's for UK or euro models, and we need some module to plug that particular function in. How lame would that be? A light that tells you when to shift for optimal fuel economy, possibly re-programmable for when to shift for max performance , now there would be a twist! Sorry for doubting but it is raining today and i hate looking at my bike when i can't take it out,it makes me want to cry!
Whoa cruise control on a bike,,let's just strip all the fun out of riding shall we? Deff not for me.
