Need Help Installing Dakota Digital Tach on 2005 SuperGlide
I'm posting my call for help in 2 places. I've searched the forum and I'm still stumped.
I've installed every wire except the tach wire.
Where do I get a tach signal on the 05 SG?
RE: Need Help Installing Dakota Digital Tach on 2005 SuperGlide
I am not sure if it's the same on 05 as 03, but on the 03 the tach signal is the pink wire in cavity 7 of the 12 place connector [20b] located behind the headlight. You have to separate the connector and remove the plug in the cavity and plug in the tach wire. If you have a service manual and electrical manual for your bike, look at the wiring diagram for a model that comes stock with a tach and that should help you figure out the hookup.
RE: Need Help Installing Dakota Digital Tach on 2005 SuperGlide
It was a pink wire when I did my Sporty too. The previous caller is right, it REALLY helps to have the electrical diagrams if ya wanna do it right. In lieu of that, if I'm not mistaken, you can take the tach signal off one side (can't remember which) of the coil.
RE: Need Help Installing Dakota Digital Tach on 2005 SuperGlide
On a 2005, pin #3 on the back of the speedo should provide a suitable signal. If not there, pin #3 on the ECM should work. Then of course, there is the coil itself.
I went through this for a 2006 because there is nothing documented and the speedo pin#3 doesn't work on the 06s. Somewhere I dug up an obscure reference to pin #3 on the ECM which worked fine even though it is undocumented. But from what I recall from my research back in November, you should get a signal on that speedo pin.

My memory is getting bad with old age, but I think I recall a warning, maybe on J&P's technical bulletin board, that if you have a tach designed to get it signal from the ECM, you may destroy the tach by hooking it to the coil. I'd check with the tach manufactured before hooking it up to the coil. Maybe I am imagining this?????
RE: Need Help Installing Dakota Digital Tach on 2005 SuperGlide
Thanks for the help so far.
The pink wire doesn't exist on the 05.
I've read the forums about the #3 Pin on the ECM.
In the top slot of my electrical caddy the top component looks more like the ICM with a standard 12 pin plug. Each pin has a wire in it.
The one wire I don't understand is the Databus wire that in the manual went to both the tach and the Speedo.
THis is suppose to be an easy install if I could onlt find a tach feed.
Everything else is working good and the gauge cleans up my bars.
Thanks again.
I'm taking all ideas where I can find a tach feed.

Randy, where'd you get the Dakota Digital Tach??
Sorry, cant help on the 05 wiring, but it seems like you should be able to get some info from the tach manufacturer.

Randy-This probably isn't going to help much, but I'm in the process of this tach signal for my 06 WG right now. I've bought a 2 5/8" tach from harley that they say is for my bike. Well no where in the manual do I find this pink signal wire? The instructions for the tach says it's there, but the manual doesn't show it, or can I find it tucked under the speedo. The service dept, called me and the guy told me to hook it up to pin #3 on the speedo plug for my year. I hooked it up temporarily and it seemed to work for me, I'm waiting on a mount, and then I hope it's good to go. Call your local dealer and maybe they'll be able to shed some light??
