I think there have been threads on this already, but where do you get a insurance salvage bike? Also, I understand when they're totaled, they cut the VIN off the frame so it can't be titled as HD any more ....

Any 'gouge' would be appreciated ....

I am thinking of trying to get a basket case and going from there ....

Actually the Dyna has a clear title. Apparently the insurance company never bothered to give it a salvage title. The VIN gets cut off when the frame is replaced not when a bike is totalled. I honestly have no idea on getting a title or insurance on a salvage bike. Luckily I didn't have to find out.

Do you mind if I ask how "good" a deal you got on that bike?

I'd kinda like to know too as this is something I have thought of as a "winter" project, for next year. Might be a cheap way for me to get a inexpensive RK or something like that or perhaps even to make some side cash. Where do you even start to look? I've seen some site for bent bikes and what not but that makes me really leery. Yeah I bought my DWG over the internet but no money was exchanged till I drove out and actually saw what I was buying.

Sweet looking dyna though, you did real good.

I work at the collisiomn center for a dealership here in the NW so I got a very good deal and was able to examine the bike fairly extensively before pulling the trigger. The dealership actually purchased the Dyna from the insurance company and was planning on fixing it. For some reason they decided not to go forward with it and I was able to buy it from them. Pretty much a win-win situation. They made a few bucks selling it to me and I ended up with a good ride for about half of what it is probably worth. Keep in mind that I didn't have to pay for any labor and got the majority of the parts at a discounted rate. With the economy the way it is, you may be better off watching for a non wrecked bike that the owner needs to sell and is willing to deal on. Also, I got lucky and the insurance company never bothered to total this bike out through DMV. If they had it would have been a poor investment. I bought this bike to ride, and wasn't really concerned with the title brands. However, if it had been titled as a salvage bike it would be worth considerably less.

I don't know if I'd recommend buying a wrecked bike to rebuild or not. It worked out very well for me, but I also know of a few situations that did not. If you are planning to buy one to keep and aren't worried about reselling it, it could be the right decision. If you are looking to buy one as an investment to sell I'm not so sure.
