Just doing the 10,000-mile service on my '09. Fall-away seems to be just right as is. You can visualize the amount of deflection without a special setup; just lay a tape measure next to the front of the fender, and against something stationary. I put my bike on my lift for this. Manual says 3-4"--that's pretty easy to see, even w/o a tape measure.
No I would have the bike on a lift and remove the top clamp completely and allow lower tree to drop out of the cup and pack lower bearing and then do upper bearing in my hand. Reinstall. Reset fallaway and retorque top nut. I have heard of a few bikes that had dry bearings in the neck. Its not necessary but you seem like the preventive maintainance kinda rider.
You make it sound almost as easy as the oil change. Was a wrench for many years and always try and do it myself. Thanks for noticing.
Sounds like you're much the same and have done this procedure. Whats an easy way to set up the indicator at the front of the fender. I've been told to use a hanger to mark the fall away.
I weigh 280 and ride mostly solo, ride to avoid potholes here in Michigan.
You will still have a spacer provided with the Progressive set, it is made from pvc pipe.
So you are running 20 wt oil with progressive standard height springs? Correct?
What did you end up with as far as sag Loaded with rider?
Yes on both counts.
Never measured it, just knew it handled bumps and railroad tracks better.
I dont really get into the whole measuring of the front fender deal that HD preaches. Its more of a feels tight enough kinda deal.
I suppose if a guy wanted to be specific about it, you could tape some heavy paper to the garage floor and mark the center and 4 inches off each side. Then make a pointer out of a hanger and fix it to your axle (on mine it has a hole on right side) then center pointer to mark, and use that method while slightly lifted on stand.
