I can appreciate your creativity, but why not just shop around for a blank fender of the shape and cut you like?
If anyone runs across any other companies producing quality rear fender blanks in 8.5in width (Mounting 8-3/8) please submit that information here for those seeking answers to similar questions.

Ciphex...I could be wrong, but most of those custom fenders are for "custom applications". Unless you get one specifically made for you year/model bike, you are probably gonna have to do some cutting and fabing. I dont think it will be as simple as bolt on an go.
I consulted the experts at my local Harley shop and they measured the rear fender on my fxdf and helped me find a blank of similar width (8.375 on the '09 FXDF). They didn't recommend the company, but the swingarm rear fenders at RWD come in a variety of styles, good quality steel, and all the popular widths: http://www.russwernimont.com/store/index.php?cPath=2_19
If you're curious, I went with the Longshot.

8.375 sounds more like the width for Street Bobs and Super Glides. I thought the Fat Bob was wider than that. I used a 2009 touring fender, it was far from bolt on but it worked for what I wanted. It was real close to the size of the Fat Bob from what I understand.
You're absolutely right. The Harley tech walked over to a Street Bob rather than a Fat Bob for the fender width. Since the Street Bob is stock with 160mm rear tire, it stands to reason that the fender on a Fat Bob would be larger with a 180mm rear tire. I'll be headed down to the shop to clarify exactly what the width is on the fender.
After visiting the Harley shop, the '09 FXDF measures 9" in width.

Isn't this covered by insurance? What do you mean by fender supports, are the fender struts bent? If you need forks, is the frame damaged?
There's a reason insurance companies total out bikes that have been in a collision. If it turns out that yours is a total lose offer to 'buy' it back from them. Strip it to the frame and look for any "wrinkles" in the finish, a sure sign of metal fatigue. Examine the engine cases, ect. very closely. If any of the major components are suspect, replace them or part the whole thing out.
Better yet let the insurance company keep it, and use any equity you may have to get a new bike.
