I'm no mechanic, but it seems to me lugging the crap out of the motor by shifting too soon would put more stress on it.

I dunno...I think MOCO needs to revise the owners manual on those shift points by 10 mph for a new motor. Just my .02.

MOCO needs to put a tach on every bike and give an RPM to shift at. MPH and shifting IMO don't go hand and hand. What if you are going up hill with a passenger? How about down hill without a passenger? Lets not even factor in wind.

Forget about shift points! Just ride and shift by feel and sound. And I agree DONT LUG,its worse than hitting the rev limiter IMO.

I usually hit 3rd at around 50-55 (rev limiter kicks in somewhere around 60). I probably don't hit 4th until I hit whatever speed I want to cruise at.

I don't have a 6th gear, but I rarely hit 5th at less than 65-70.

I use my tach and shift at about 3K to the next gear. That also depends on what I am doing like others have said going up hill with a passenger and getting up to highway speeds usually shift higher and faster to keep away from the oncoming cages. You will find the "sweet spot" for you particular setup and riding conditions. And I usually find it best to downshift if the tach reads below 2k in any gear. Want to have that pick-up available when needed.

Every one has some good advice for ya. If you have a tach use it and shift between 2200, and 3000 or your rideing style. I did same as you for brake in 50 + miles. Dont LUG it anything under 2000 could be a LUG.
