Make sure you have a shallow enough oil pan to fit under the bike. The all in one drain and storage containers won't fit, at least not the one's I've found.
Voyager, Do yourself a favor and pick up some o-rings for the oil plug. They only cost a dime and you should change it each time you change the oil or tranny oil. Also, don't forget to pour oil into the new filter before screwing it on. Your motor will be running without an oil supply until the filter fills up if you don't.
Here's the diagram from the'06 Dyna Service Manual which is CORRECT:Notice the difference.

I hope I did this right, this may help with the manual error... If anyone can get the actually pic's in the post please do it.. It's shut eye time.. CYA
I just posted on this topic over the weekend. Only the early manuals were incorrect. Mine, which I got in March 06, was correct.
Oil drain is rearward of jiffy stand, oriented horizontally. Tranny is is in center of engine, oriented vertically.
At 600 miles, I changed oil only (no filter) - took 2 quarts. I have the oil cooler on my 06 Dyna, so your results may vary. I figure on the dealer checkup, filter, and switch to Sythetic (Crankcase, Primary, Tranny) at 1200 miles, right before I head to Sturgis.
Just look at the pic's I posted it SHOULD solve the mystery.. The service manual is correct.. anyone that has any doubts as to which owners manual they have, should look at my post and check out the last pic... straight from the service manual... Everybody should get one...definately worth it..
on decaff, hahahahaha.. oil change done... 5.00 oil filter wrench from napa. thanks all 4 the help..i'll be back.. all ride safe, have a great weekend !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! trans change next,i'll need more advice,i am sure ...
Go to Walmart and buy a strap wrench. Strap wrench is like a socker extension, but with a nylon strap attached to one end. They sell them in the oil dept. Wrap the nylon around the filter and then use a ratchet to remove the filter. Works like a charm.
Looks like this -
I noticed the error in the manual back in October. Called the HD factory rep at the moco and told him. He brought up the owner's manual and service manual on microfiche and freaked out when he saw the error. I wish I had recorded the phone call. There is an old thread around here that talks about it and has pics.
Hey JamieWG... That message was the one your talking about..I'm (Skeeter5) on the other forum site.. Ya.. we talked about that way back.... The pic's I posted here was those pic's.... I remember the discussion...Thought this could be a sticky message and placed in the tech forum... The filter wrench works good... But, I still make a mess with the oil....LOL
