I've always felt that the cleanest way would be to mount the speedometer like the Rocker ... on the tank. We need somebody like Loner or Joe to carve up a new trim ring for the tank that has two mounting points for the Old Style Guage mount. Attached pic has arrow pointing to trim ring I'm talking about. The new part would effectively move the speedo off the bars completely which the current options dont do.
funny you mention that... I've been toying with the idea of a bracket to mount it to the tank bolts up front.
Too damn busy at work to get anything done on the bike.
(not too busy to read this forum though...lol)
I really think it can be pulled off.
Maybe jackyl will rescue us :P

will the accutonix or the sportster set up allow for a tank lift???
Apples and oranges. The Accutronix and Sporty rigs are designed to provide an alternative way to mount the speedo on the bars (or thereabouts).
I considered swapping out to a new SB tank setup, buying the tank, etc. It involved a ridiculous number of parts (lots of little HD parts), and in the end was both too expensive and too complicated. Maybe it can be done more simply, but the only way we could figure to do it was with the stock SB parts. Keep in mind, you're dealing with the electronics here. On top of that, I honestly don't love the look of the speedo on the tank, personally. I like the idea of a gauge cluster mounted somewhere off the bars. There just isn't an ideal setup that I've seen, so I intend to do a custom one.

Not following you here -- your arrow obviously points at the gas cap. You can't just put something else there.... What did you have in mind? Just not following...
Not sure if I am going to help you, but there are a few of us who have changed out our tank set up for one like the Low rider set up. This is where the speedo is mounted on the tank along with the Tach. Now this may not be anyway what you are looking for, but just an idea. Good Luck
I am switching to the low rider tank over the winter. It has gotten far more expensive than i thought it would be. there are a lot of small parts that i have bought over last 6 months and have added up quick. finding a used low rider tank can also be difficult and even the dented and scratched ones go for over $200. also one of the brackets is considered "obsolete" by the MOCO and are very difficult to find. I will post pix of the progress of mine once i get it started (was in the 70's last week)

Go out to your bike and remove the gas cap. Once you do it will be clear. There is a trim ring around it that has 8 screws in it. All that would be needed is to mill a new ring that had mounting tabs on it. Would fit all Superglides regardless of year, bar type, and size that have that tank. The gas cap works independently of the trim ring.

OK, I think I get what you are saying... I think. So the new trim ring would have like tabs sticking up at the top/front, to which you could mount the speedo bracket? And the speedo would then sit sort of up and in front of the gas cap? Is that what you mean? That shouldn't be all that difficult to make...if there is room and everything.
I'm with you guys, but have another spin on it. One is to find a small speedo and replace the fuel gauge (wont need one with low fuel warning light!). The second is the Rocker idea and mount again where the fuel gauge is, but above the tank.
I also am looking for a trashed speedo to look inside. I'm wondering how much I can trim off the housing depth? It *may* be a long shot, but was thinking of sinking it right in where the fuel gauge is........
