I finally had a chance to get started on the conversion this evening. The front wheel I just stuck so I would have something to drool over before I shut it down for the night. I decided to use the stem that came with the trees and it turned out to be the perfect length. I have a couple of questions. Which wires go to the turn signals so I can pull them tomorrow and move the signals to the forks and the stock headlight is a three wire headlight. My new light is a two wire light. Which two wires coming from the harness do I need.
I can't wait to see this completed!
Turn sigs, the wires are Blue, Purple w/Black stripe and Black. White connector on the left side, black connector on the right side(same color combo).
Not sure about the headlight.
Hope this helps..
Salebrity, the trees are from Cass County Choppers. They have 3 degrees of rake and I am using my stock tubes and lowers. The machine work on the trees is great. The customer service is not.
777, thanks for the wiring info. There are several people on here that have completed this conversion and thier rides turned out really nice.
I've ran into a snag. For some reason when I tighten up the axle nut the wheel gets tight and hard to turn. The rotor is lined up with the center of the caliper so I don't know what the deal is.
You using the stock lowers? What wheel are you using?
If it helps, I used a Wide Glide wheel and Wide Glide lowers so everything would line up correctly. If you are using a WG wheel and mid-glide lowers, that is where your problem is.
Would you mind getting me a measurement of the stem from Cass County? I would like a measurement of the total length from tip-to-tip.
Thanks, and let me know if I can help with anything dealing with the wheel, caliper, rotor, and slider alignment.
When I first did mine I used Wide Glide triple trees, wheel, spacers, and axle. The problem is that the sliders between the Wide Glide and the other Dyna's are different as far as caliper location. I had to shim the caliper and the disc to center the caliper over the disc. So you might want to take off the caliper and tighten up the axle to make sure your not having the same problem that I had.
Thanks for the help guys. I think my problem was the spacers were to wide. I guess they were side loading the bearings to much and putting them in a bind. So I milled the spacers a couple of thousands and now the wheel turns better. If you give it a good turn it will spin a few times before stopping. I would like to get it a little looser, so maybe a little more milling is needed on the spacers. I am using the mid glide lowers with everything else wideglide. The caliper and rotor lined up perfect with the wheel dead center of the legs. The lowers are differant in the clamp area of the axle with the mideglides being narrower. So I had to mill the shoulder off the axle a little so that it would not stick in past the clamp so that the spacer would sit flush with the lower leg. It is coming along. I am just taking my time with it. The last thing I want is for the wheel to decide to stop turning while running 70 down the highway.
Jmpancoast, before I assembled the new trees I stood the stock stem and cass county stem side by side and the cass county stem was 1/4" shorter. That is probably to compensate for the the thinner lower tree.
BTW: Anyone know which two wires out of the three I need from the stock harness to wire up this new two wire headlight.
