I'm going to look at purchasing a 2000 Dyna Superglide tomorrow. It hasn't be started in three years, but I am told ran perfectly before the owner's father passed away (he was the rider). It has only 9,000 miles on it, which is nice. The pictures I've seen of it are immaculate, so it seems promising. She told me someone at a Harley dealer told her to drain all of the old gas, swish new gas around inside the tank three or four times, and then fill it up and try to start it. She said she has no idea how to do any of this, so I offered a little bit of my time to try to help, figuring I'll be able to talk her down a little bit if I decide to purchase the bike. I was wondering if I should do anything else to the bike before trying to start it. I thought it might be a wise idea to change the oil before starting it, but wasnt sure if it would be worth just doing the gas, starting it and letting it run for only a few to know that it does, and then do the oil and other fluids on my own time.
Another idea I had, but I am not sure how valid a test it would be, is to take the plugs out and look at their condition. I figure it could give me a clue as to how the bike was running before it sat. I've ridden sport bikes for past years so I'm not too familiar with the intricacies of Harleys, so any help is welcome. Thanks guys and gals.
You might have to rebuild the carb...I'll bet gas has been sitting in it and has turned to varnish. I'd also look at the tires for cracking. Old tires can be very dangerous. Of course you'd probably need a fresh battery as well. Good luck!

+1 on the battery. Got my sons after sitting up for 3 years... Dead battery.
Fresh gas and fresh battery; don't melt the starter; hope it's "warm" before you try to start it (ie not 40 degrees...) should hear it catch real quick if there's gas where it should be...be nice...be patient
