Default Problems with strut cover removal!

Finally got my tribar tail light, started breaking everything apart only to find out that I didn't have the right torx socket size. I got a torx set from autozone which was the only place that I could find a torx set for some reason. I get home try to remove the bolt again only to have the socket itself strip along with my torx bolt. The dang torx bolt is in there pretty tight, I got one off half way but it is still pretty tight. The other wont budge and is partially stripped also. Anyone have any help on getting the bolts out ie heat? Anyone know the bolt size? Just want to know if I could order them online to get the ball started. It sucks not having the scoot running....

Thats strange man, I just put a sissy bar with rigid plates on mine and had to remove the same bolts and didn't have a problem. They were tight but once I initially broke them free they came out by hand. You may want to talk to the dealership. If they have a really hard time with it then you may be able to get them on a warranty issue. (well...good luck with that) They are supposed to be operator level maintainence.

I took mine out without a hitch...Like the previous post said, they are tight at first, but then break free and come right out.

Greetings,

Sounds like somebody either over-tightened them or didn't use anti-seize...Anyway just go slow on wrenching them out and they'll come on out. On the bolts, once you get one out just go to a good hardware store (not a Lowe's or Home Depot) and they can hook you up. I can only imagine what that bolt would cost at a dealer!

I just did this, I got the socket style torx from lowes (cus they were open) and used an impact wrench to remove them.

Finally got the chance to work on the bike again, damn last minute reports and finals for school. I got one side out and the other still is about half way out. I was planning on putting some lubricant in there, putting a locking vice and hitting it with a hammer until it loosens because the torx is totally stripped. I plan on replacing the two bolts with the easy off brackets, since I am planning on grabbing a sissy bar in the next few months. My fiance is going to get on the bike next summer...Got the tribar on but stripped the hex bolt that puts that puppy in place, wtf is my problem! Maybe I need to stop going to the gym

You have to seat the (proper size) socket in the bolt before turning them to ensure they do not strip. I actually hit mine lightly with a hammer first. Never had a problem...

you are probably using the wrong size torx. Easy to mistake using a T25 hex on a T27 bolt for instance.

Yeah wrong size torx. I know that now. But how do I get it out? I have the same problem except I stripped it without even moving the bolt at all. How can I get it out?

Bro,

I heard you can put a slit in it and try removing it with a flat head screw driver.....I tried putting some heat to the bolt with a electric sod iron but I guess the bolt is too big because it didn't do a damn thing. I believe it was my original problem, which started it stripping but the rest down hill after I saw it was the wrong size.

Even the one that came out looks a little chewed up

I wonder if everyone frequently replaces these bolts
