maddog - it's actually quite noticeable - I compared metz 880, avon and some other 170 tires to the SE Dunlop a week ago at dealer - if you want wide - get the GT502

Default SE 180 cost?

Just wondering if there was anywhere cheaper than my dealer to get the SE 180's.I've seen posts that list costs as low as $172.Dealer is $313!

Since that tire is made by dunlop specifically for HD, you can really only get it through the dealers. If you found it online for $172, go for it. Don't forget tube and rimstrip.

You can also try searching "GT502" which is the model number of that tire.

If I may...I have that tire. I have had two situations where it lost grip going over a bad section of tar-snakes in NC.

If I were you, I'd buy a better performing tire from Metzeler, Avon, etc...The GT502 to me is more for looks.

since someone mention pirelli and metzler. I was told or I read that metzler is a division of pirelli tire and that pirelli actually makes them. If I am wrong about this please let me know. Just thought id pass on the info.

One of the dumbest statements I have ever read here on the forums.

I know I'm a different year, but when I lowered my rear, I made my own cork screw type loom to keep the wire tight to the side of the fender. I just used some thin metal rod( coat hanger or welding rod) and bent it around a round screw driver. I then made a little loop in the middle of it that would allow it to attach to the fender bolt. Considering that I shredded my original wires first time out, this has worked well with two up and no rubbing of the wires.

I went with a 19" GT501 Dunlop. Only got about 7k miles out of it and it is done. I am going up to a 21x3.25" rim, and mounting Metz 880s front and rear. 170/60/17 in the rear, and a 120/70/21 in the front. Motorcyclesuperstore had the rear for $180 and the front for $120 IIRC.

I liked the 502 in the rear, but only got about 6500 miles out of it both times I ran it.

Dont need the kit if you already have the detachable sideplate kit. It eliminates the bolts from under the fender and tucks in the wiring.

Metz was bought by Pirelli in the '80s, but they are two distinct companies. Metz is still a German company, and Pirelli is headquartered in Italy. I don't think Pirelli actually makes the tires for Metz; I believe they are still made in Germany.

If you're doin the work yourself don't worry about the kit. Just make it work. If somebody else is doin the work check to see if it has the kit and don't let 'em sell you one if it doesn't need it. Mine didn't have the kit on it.
The 180 tire definitely handles better on the curves, braking and all because it's a softer rubber which means it won't last as long.
