Default Softail tank fit a Dyna?

Merry Christmas to all you Dyna guys and gals. I have gotten a lot of valuable info from this great group of riders..thanks again. I was told that a Softail gas tank can be made to fit a Dyna..any truth to this or just BS? I rode some today (51 F), nice ride, little cool, lots of cagers to watch out for.
Thanks again,
Tim

yes it can be done, but i have never done it before. see a softy tank is a low mounting tank and the dyna is a high mounting tank. the tank mounting tabs need to be removed and replaced or re-positioned. iam not sure if the rear mounting tabs of the tank need to be reworked also. but anything that is metal can be reworked to work on anything you want it to, just do you want to take the time to do it. what softy tank you looking to change to? jackyl

Softails don't have a square backbone like the fxr/dynas, do they? When did they switch from the round backbone?

Not sure about the historical aspects, but I saw a recent photo of a Softail without the tank and it had a square backbone just like the Dynas ... (photo was in American Iron I think) ... it was probably a 2000-later model ....

At one point, I was thinking it might be interesting to install a Softail tank ... or even a Touring tank (6-gal.!!!) ....

I checked www.bikebandit.com for FLSTF models and found out that 2000-2006 models have the (semi)square backbone:

The fuel tank on these models looks like this:

Notice the difference at the rear end compared to the "Dyna" fuel tanks:

Nice ... thanks for the details ... (those appear to be for carbureted bikes) ....

Would have to figure out a vertical mount for the back side of the tank (under the seat I suppose) ... seems like it would be do-able ....

The one thing I really liked about the Softail and Touring bikes is that there is a pretty wide variety of stretched/sculpted tanks .... not much in that way for the Dynas ... also, it seems there is a much wider variety of aftermarket tanks for the carbed bikes than for the EFI bikes ....

Someone could just ask someone on the softail forum to measure the width of the tunnel on their tank. If it will fit over our backbone, nothing to it to get new mounting tabs fabbed up.

my neighbor has a 98 springer that I help him with all the time its got a square backbone on it and that style would work if you mover the front tank mounts.

Or if you don't change the front tank mount of the Softail tank, you have a built in 'tank lift' ... not sure how many inches ... probably a few more than 2" ... heheheh!
