I'm still pretty new at this, so I need some advice. Have an '09 Fat Bob, at this point I'm just running Rush 1.75 Slip Ons, with no changes in tuning. I'll be getting the Vance & Hines Pro Pipe, and some sort of Stage I A/C (not sure whether HD or Fuel Moto yet). I have the SE Race Tuner Module my wife bought me for Christmas. Here's my question. Can I swap out the pipes and the AC and still ride the bike into the shop for the Dyno tune, or do I need to trailer it in for the tune? The ride is about 25 miles from my place, and I don't want to screw anything up, but don't want to pay to have someone else do the install.
I wouldn't risk it. They already run lean and while the computer will try to compensate it won't be enough in my opinion. Others may have a different opinion though.
It might be a good idea to call your tuner and ask him. Is it a dealership or an independent shop?
i had the dealer do the install on both my bikes. they actually sold me the pipes cheaper both were vance and hines and the air cleaner.. bottom line if i was to do the install myself and purchase the parts off-line it most likely would have cost me more and now its warrantied through them. i would let the dealer do it aslong as the price is reasonable
I got an especially good deal on the pipes, so the dealership was not an option for that part. The cost for installation of the A/C at the dealership is ridiculous. The local dealer would do the tune for me with my Race Tuner module. The problem is I don't have a trailer for moving the bike readily available, but would try to make arrangements if its necessary.
I'm doing this in phases to minimize overall cost. I'll have the parts for the A/C and the pipes early next month, and don't want to stare at them in the garage since the weather is so wet here, it's a good time to do the install. I also plan the 103 upgrade for March (my birthday), but even that is a challenge as a dealership south of where I live is offering a great deal on parts/install of the 103 kit, but that dealer doesn't have a dyno, so they send the bike off to another dealer for tuning. The dealer they send it to is VERY EXPENSIVE for the tune. My local dealer offers a decent rate for the Dyno tune, so in that case I'd have to move the bike again for the tune.
It's clear that people do their own work here, and I'm willing to do the work myself, just don't know how to shuttle the bike to the tuner once it's done.

well if you are defiantly doing the 103 upgrade the dealer has to remove the exhaust and the Air cleaner so get a quote and then tell him you have these parts and he should not charge you anything more b/c they have to be removed and replaced anyway and for the tuner he may charge an hr labor for that just an idea to save you some agg
I would like to urge you to buy the doherty power pacc air cleaner over the choices you listed above. The doherty will bring an extra 2-4 hp at peak over the H-D or ness A/C(also will be felt throughout the rpm range). For the little bit extra you pay it is a huge bargain for the performance gain. Utilizes the same covers as the H-D or ness, better backing plate and you can choose the breather system you want. I think you will be ok riding the bike in just don't go to WOT.
seems like you're going to have to get the bike dyno'd twice...
why don't you just wait and do it all in one shot?
you'll be fine riding the bike to get it tuned once you change the pipes and A/C unit. but if you're going to do that, just to ride for two months and bring it back for the 103, it seems a little redundant.
why not just be patient, ride the bike as is until you're ready to do the 103, then ride the bike to the dealer to have the 103 done, and pipes and air cleaner put on. if you put the pipes and air cleaner on before you bring it there, the techs at the dealership are going to have to take off both components to get to the motor to do any work, so if it was me, i'd rather have them touch my new parts only once, rather than having them take them off, and put them back on.
i say do it all at your local dealer if you're dead set on going the dealer route for all the work. it seems like if you take the bike to the dealer running the special on 103 parts and service you're going to make up the difference getting it sent out for an expensive tune, whereas your local dealership has a dyno on location...
