Basically I didn't have the right tool to remove the bottom allen bolts so I thought I would drain them from the top and then go get the allen wrench I needed. I'm the guy who learns from my own mistakes. No biggie. The bike will be bitchin when I get done. I have spent as much on tools as I have on parts. If I knew I was going to spend so much on tools to work on this thing I would have bought a custom bike, but like I said, it's all part of the journey.

Don't sweat it. I once sat waiting for help in my garage for 45 minutes pinching both sides of the fuel crossover cause 2 gallons of gas won't fit in a one gallon jug....
hilarious.. i laughed out loud.

Most everything I ever learned was because I phucked it up first time through.

For me, experience promotes retention much better than text and pages.

I had trouble with my forks the first time too. I ruined the chrome dust cap during removal (1 week wait for a new one) and then ruined one of those bushings inside during removal. (10 day wait).

Oh, also, before I put the fork caps back on, I decided to remount my handlebars to get them up off the gas tank. My fingers slipped threading up the first handlebar clamp bolt and the damn bolt fell down into the fork! I had to remove the whole works and dump out all the new fluid to get it out of there.

The second went much smoother after I consulted some old post on the process. It didn't help that the cheapo drip pan I picked up from wal-mart had a crack in it a leaked fluid all over my floor either. Nothing I do to my bike is ever easy or goes as planned. I guess it's all part of the journey. I'm having the fork mounts machined off and sending a bunch of parts to PowderPro this week. I'll post some pics once I have something to show.
It's not that everything is or should be difficult or impossible on your bike friend, you gotta plan ahead. I'm a wrench for a living and I personally believe that in order to get good finished product, you gotta have a map or plan laid out either on paper or in your head, (if it's in your head, no drinky drinky during). But let me tell ya, I have had a number of times where I have had snafuus "F" my golden plans up, like your walmart drain pan leaking all over the floor, like the guy with the fuel leaking over his garage floor, hoping someone either comes in or the damn thing quits spewing it's 2 gal of gas in the 1 gal container, it's happened to me too, followed up by busting my knee into something because I want to get one last bolt out and I needed to **** an hour ago, but too stubborn to stop workin, and at that point, I say screw it, my F'n plan is going to hell, shut the lights off and close the garage door. Tomorrow is another day....

Do you mean you're having the Fender mounts shaved off the lower legs? I've always liked this mod and plan on doing it with mine eventually. Here is a guy that does some good work pretty cheap:

Yep, shaved, machined, same thing. A local machine shop is going to do it.

ha... even when you get the manual... make sure you read it right. I missed a good local event (Hot August Nights), because I was doing my 5K service..... misread 100"lb for 100'lb..... clutch adjustment plate stripped faster than a horny pole dancer.... not a new one within a 300 mile radius..... drilled it out, welded in some 3/8" steel pipe, ground smooth, tapped it.... reinstalled and did it right...... done!.... right about the time my friend calls me ".... last burnout competition right now and then event's over"..... ahhhhghghghghhg!

So.... read 2 or 3 times.... then do it.... lol
