The backfire is not so uncommon with harley's,to me it happens once in a while say if I let the starter off without the bike actually starting. Or if I stall and try to restart quickly to run away from the embarrasment.
Your grinding noise when you hit the button you hear something turning,just not the engine? That would be your starter drive clutch. X another if its under warranty have them do it. If your on your own it is apparently not a huge job,just a bit of a PITA.

But grinding on start (or any time) can't be a good thing. LOL
I'd surely keep looking until I solved that little puzzle.

I have to agree, that a backfire on cold start ain't a big deal. Some bikes do it and some don't.
