Vance & Hines Straightshot Slip-On mufflers with Big City Thunder (BCT) Monster Baffles. This is as close to the old sound as you'll get without bigger cams.

Toss the Fuel injector - get a carb and tune it low.

but beware the lower idle will inhibit lubrication.
i thought about doing it to my bob.

other than that buy an old one and re build it. nothing better than riding something that every bolt was torqued down by your own hands. .

There are tuners that let you drop the idle speed, but the twin cams need the higher idle to keep up the oil pressure...

It'd be a boring way to break a nice motor.

I got V&H slip ons for my 07 Bob, if I had to do it again I'd go for Cycle Shacks, best sound ever.

Uh there is no such thing as "an old school carburetor sound" carburetors have nothing to do with the sound of combustion and crank firing.

He'll probably need Pipes, Intake, Cams, and a tuner...

Really, just have him ride the stock pipes for a little bit and listen around for what he likes on other bikes.

X2...I have the Big City Thunder baffles in the older style SE slip ons, sounds decent, but you'll never get that lopey carbed sound. Pretty much anything is better than stock though...IMHO I'd go with the Cycle Shack slip ons till you can afford to do full exhaust and a stage 1. Its all in taste and budget though, everyone will tell you something different.

Have you ever listened to a carbed Twin Cam next to an injected one? There is a difference in how they sound and that's why everyone refers to it as the "carbed sound". Is it all in the carb? Not entirely but it does come into play. Biggest reason for the difference is the cam, there's less overlap in the new bikes to make the EPA ***** happy. Even with the same cams a carbed bike should have more lope because ir relies on the vacuum signal to meter the fuel where the injection relies on the ECU.
