Now I know that all of us who have just recently picked up a 06 model, ofcourse I speak for myself. But I am a little concerned and a little pissed that I didn't hold out for a 07. Does anyone know if there is all that much difference in the motors and if it will affect the trade in value in the earlier models? How much difference between the twin cam 88 and the twin cam 96? I think this new motor will not change for several years. It just seems that Harley keeps everything top secret until the new model is unvieled. well, I'm happy with my 06 and have modified the exhaust and pulled off the reflectors and the tank badges, so I'll keep it. But if I would have known about the new motor I think I would have held out a few more months. Just my 2 cents, thats all. I think this new motor will decrease sales on big bore kits.
This doc details all the changes made to the '07 model line - including details about the engine internals.
Not a big deal, especially with the Dynas. The only real differance in the Dyna line is the longer crank stroke.
This is what all vehicle manufacturers do. Every year, they improve something. Otherwise, they wouldn't sell new machines. If you're considering a new purchase, just look at the manufacturers flagship line, and see what changes happened there. You know they will eventually end up in the other models. I don't regret my purchase one bit.
Now, if I had just bought an '06 StreetGlide..........
What I'm curious about is the "active exhaust" this looks to me like a large headache. Reading the doc from the post above sounds like if you even touch "it" it's broke, and then how much to "fix" it?
From what I have read the active exhaust is HDI only. From my understanding thats international only. What I'm really excited about is the one piece horn assembly. That really turns me on.
Have an 06 Super glide custom. Now I keep telling myself I have a classic as it is the last of the 88's, and I get to change the pipes. WHOOOOOO HOOOOOO!!!!
Engine size is not all that important. I'm going to find out if the lighter parts will fit right in - that would be helpful (plus the 88s would rev higher from the lower stroke).
If I was worried about size I'd get the 103 big bore, or have gone w/a Victory. Plus, my Outlaw is 107, so why does my Bob have to beat that?
My feelings are if you wait to see what comes out next year, you would never buy any bike. I'm sure theres folks out there who complained when the 06 came out and they purchased a 05. Like Hound Dog said, it's a business, HD will never let you know what their plans are for next year. As for the motors, I have not verified it, but I understand the top half is a 96 and the bottom of all HD motors is now a 103. The difference is in the bore, stroke, etc... If this is true, I would guess sales of pistons, cylinders, and cams etc... will increase so people can put 103's on there 07 bikes. If this happens you could see HD go 103's on 08 bikes. Think you should wait? Glad I didn't.
Agreed, there is no good time to buy...hell I bought a new '99 EVO softtail knowing damn well that the balanced TC was right around the corner and enjoyed the bike just as much, maybe more since the EVO was a mature design.

And this makes good business sense in most cases. A textbook example of a successful company that went out of business as a direct result of pre-announcing new products, was the Osborne Computer Company. You can read a brief history here
According to proponents of the Osborne Effect, the final blow occurred in 1983 when Adam Osborne boasted about an upcoming product months before it could be released, killing demand for the company's existing products.
I'm pretty sure that the fundamentals of the 06 dyna motor were carried over to the '07 except for the extra stroke and light weight pistons and connecting rods. Don't forget, your '06 engine got all the internal goodies, better oiling, new cam design, 6 speed tranny, better cam chain follower setup, new built up cams, new cam bearings, light weight clutch, new starter design, oil line free engine, self adjusting primary, light weight clutch setup, lighter valve train, better flowring heads etc. Hell, the improvements to the '06 motors alone was a pretty deal compared to the other twin cams excluding the displacement bump of the 07's.
So '06 Dyna owners are the closest and already have the core components of the new stroker 96" motor.....just bolt on a 95 or 98 inch kit and it's right in there. Just my opinion.
This is what I heard as well...the updated internals of the 06 carry over to 07...just that 07s have been stroked...unlike me lately...I really have to stop working nights!
