Depends on the bike I'm riding. On my present Gold Wing and other touring motorcycles I've owned, I prefer to look through the windshield. On my FXDC I don't like any shield or bags at the present. On a road rocket I prefer to look over the windshield.
I have a QR windshield that came with the deal on my Dyna. Tried it a few times and I still can't find joy. The wind buffers me worse with the shield than without since I don't ride with a helmet most of the time. I find with the shield my glasses want to fly off. Wind is redirected and comes up from the front of the gas tank, up my nose.
It's a windscreen, not a window.....that's what your glasses, goggles, or faceshield is for. And how is MoCo supposed to make any money off you if you use cardboard?
I'm kinda amused at people who think windshields are stupid....they're generally riders who've never spent 12 hours on superslab at 75+. Without a windshield the continual wind buffetting on your chest, head, and neck for such periods is exhausting....and fatigue on a bike is dangerous. No windshield tottling around town, or on a short ride of 200 hundred miles or so is no big deal. From bar to bar a windshield drasticaly reduces your cool factor. It's a macho thing!
I've ridden from N.W.Ohio to the Smoky Mtns. on a Sporty with no shield in one 10 hour day..and had no problem. I'm amused at people who get a motorcycle and then complain about the wind. Isn't that why you got a motorcycle to begin with?

My friend, that is a minor hop, no doubt at slow secondary road speeds...you need to try something longer, out west, where you can really unwind the machine.'Course, I'm not sure a sporty can handle 80 to 90 mph all day long....and having ridden a few, I doubt few riders could handle that kind of vibration.
I like to look over the windshield. The edges of the windshield for me would be annoying and I didnt want to be seeing the world through any extra layers of glass/plastic than I already had to.
That being said, I believe most the quick detach Harley windshields are designed to be looked through. I say this because the angle the shield is set at on the bike is upright so it gives the rider the least amount of distortion for looking straight through it. Sure you can attach it low on the forks to look over it but in many cases wind buffeting becomes an issue.
I'm going to be adding some info to a windshield thread I started awhile back where I used S-hooks to extend the angle of my quick detach windshield and reduce buffeting. I found a better method that doesn't involve S-hooks.

Actually...most of the ride was done straight down i75 at about 70mph...but i was younger then and would have to say i would much rather ride the Bob i have now rather than a Sporty if i did it again! Not saying windshields don't have their place..just not on my Street Bob! As far as "out West" goes..i'd love to get out there one o' these days.......

Just mess'n with you Phil. If I had my druthers the windshield wouldn't be on my bikes....except for the Valkyrie Interstate (a big bagger, with a fairing) it really does clutter up the look of a bike.
lot of people here mention that the windshield is meant to look over.... the touring king of bikes(goldwing) has a windshield so big you gotta look through. I would guess this would be more proper for touring, however I say if you got a dyna don't run a windshield... can't handle the wind? It's only wind.
