my 95 fxd conv takes a extra long time to warm up, i have adjusted the idle mixture screw
and notice when i was in there that it had been rejeted, i know carb bikes take longer
to warm up, but DAM , could this be manifold design that causes long warm up periods,
or just probably a adjustment error on my part,
I used to have to run my enrichener for a long time(stock, with my slipons, and the big radius). With the change to my fatcat, I don't pull it out except to start and it is in very quickly there after. Bike runs when cold is the difference. Could be the pipes you run or the way it was jetted. Stock it would not run without the enrichener for a couple of miles if I recall.
How long is it taking for your bike to warm up? Which carb? What's the outside temp?
seems like i have to leave the choke on at least 5-min and for the first couple of miles
if i don't it doesn't have very good throttle response, the temp don't seem to matter
it is the stock cv carb that came on the bike, i have vh straight shots and k@n filter
i richen up the idle mixture screw, may i say with fat hands that is a PIA,
WILL RIDE IT TOMMOROW see if it's any better,
Mr Rounder, the works shocks made a world of differance THANKS for the suggestion.
I'm just curious about something. When you looked up at the fuel/air mixture screw how can you tell if it's been re-jetted? Cold air flowing over an air cooled engine, it's challenging to warm up the cylinders when moving. Not to mention the short intake on the intake manifold, it's taking in a lot of cold air. Let the bike warm up under partial enrichment in the driveway about a minute or two then drive off with partial enrichment for a couple of miles then push it in. Works for me at temps below 40*.

how was the carb rejetted? a perfect setup would be the stock jets and an 88 sportster needle(for slipons and SE stage 1 backing plate). The idle mixture at about 2.5-3 turns out. You could be either too lean as well as too rich. Swing over to your dealer, get a sporty needle and if you dont have em, a 45 low and 190 high jet. Take carb off, clean, check to be sure the enrichener is working properly(uninstall and clean it too) and put back together. Another thing is you could have an intake leak which is notorious for these bikes. this would me getting a manifold wrench, yanking it off and replacing the gaskets. I would do all of the above. Replace the gaskets and re-tune the carb along with a good cleaning. Inexpensive to buy the parts, and might as well do it all with the carb off. Now should all of this not help, you could have an exhaust leak as well.
Glad you like the works shocks. What model and length did you end up getting?
This sounds exactly like a problem I had when I first got my bike. Turns out carb wasn't the issue. It was the coil and wires. The rear cylinder's wire where it connects to the coil had corroded away and it was arcing from coil to wire. After the bike had been running for 10 (sometimes more depending on temp) with choke out for a while it would finally run without choke. I replaced the coil and wires and problem fixed! Hope this helps.
