whatt da ya think?
l'm making this pan outta sheetmetal, 3/16' thick, but l've made plenty of seatpans outta fiberglass and l gotta tell ya is the simplest thing ever, only thing is that you cannot staple the upholstery to it
here are some tips on how l did it
went to home depot and got me some fiber cloth and resin (l didn't use nottin for clearance but si a good ideea)
l isolated the fender in this case with some blue tape (if you want to mold it over the frame you gotta use some cardboard to 'simplifye' the shape, you don't want fiber getting into some places you can't get it out of), after that use a regular poitpen to mark the aproximate shape on the tape (this will help you later after the resin is cured) you can then put a light coat of wd40 on the whole thing to make the fiber not stick to it
cut your sheets of fiber before you start mixing the resin w/ the harbener, for a pan about 3/16' thick (and that's plenty thick , bellieve me) you gonna need about 16-20 layers of fiber
start mixing the resin w/ the hardener in small amounts 2-3 OZ at a time, it has a very short pot life once is mixed, have about 10-15 cheapo paintbrushes handy and plenty of disposable mixing cups (get them from local paint store, they have to be laquer-thinner resistant, don't try plastic dixie cups, will melt)
apply one coat of resin on the mold and then a layer of fiber, put more resin and another layer, don't let the resin puddle, it'll crack later on, work the air bubbles out from in between the layers (look at the 4th pic theh white area is air cought in between)
when u put the resin on the fiber it'll turn clear-ish, start working u'r way from the middle towards the edges (3rd pic)
if u cannot make it in a single step, no worries just let it dry sand the area were u need to add (coarse s.paper 50 grit or so) and add more fiber
let it dry at least 6-10 hours before u try to take it off
hope this helps if u have more questions e-mail me
the last pic is the old seat l've did

p.s. use gloves
A folded over shop rag would have been easier.
Looks like a black kotex.
That front seat looks real nice,
she'd have ta really like ya to get on the postage stamp in the back.

"ps use gloves." Agreed.
I am a modeler/moldmaker/troubleshooter/problemsolver.
I buy the gloves and brushes by the case lots.
Never have worked the fglas, need to give it a try.
So why you goin with the 3/16 stock now???
My hands don't work like they usta, and I may try out your fglas technique.
What about stiching the leather to the fglas, as opposed to stapling??
Nice little tutorial you posted here. Well done.
Thanx agin.

of course you can lace the leather on (l think stiching would take too long) all uou have to do is space and drill the holes on the sides (you could probably use a dremell tool with a fine bit if you'r doing stiches)
l helped another brother from New Zeeland with some tips on f. glass seat pans and he couldn't bellieve how easy it is to work with the stuff after he was done
p.s. if she don't wanna ride on the back F... her, taxicabs drivers gotta eat too! right?
