Keep the key in the ignition switch in the ON position (like you were going to start you bike), WHILE disconnecting the battery. (negative terminal first)
This lets the computer know that the battery is coming out by the owner and not a thief.
You may even be able to but the key switch in the ACC. position. I don't know I've never tried it. But it will for sure work in the ON position.
