Default foot ball

I have a 2000 dyna wideglide. Question, are there two kinds
of stock foot ball style cleaner covers?
I purchased the scull insert that goes in the middle of the stock cover.
To me it looks like the middle part that has the bolt hole does not
come out.
The scull insert is the one where you use the stock cleaner bolt
to attach a star like piece that has 5 attach points.
It's the one in the 2006 catalog multi fit pg562 #29417-04
Thanks

No...the "football" covers are all the same. Some of the air cleaner inserts from HD use a single bolt (from the stock cleaner/hole) to attach it. Other air cleaner inserts use a 5 bolt pattern. I have the slotted cover which uses this five bolt setup. How it works is, there's a metal plate which goes under the insert. It bolts onto the football cover using the stock bolt/hole...the plate also has five holes around the edge in which you attach the actual insert.
I think this is what you're talking about right?

Thanks for the info,
So what you are saying is that there are two different aircleaner covers.
One with the 1 bolt system and one with the five.
I have the one bolt.
So I guess that means I can't use the scull insert because it has the
five bolt pattern right?

No, hes saying it all comes in the kit, some have different designs, but they all work off of the stock air cleaner, which everyone has. It'll come with instructions...

I still am confused.
How do you take apart the center section of the stock cover?
I can't see how it comes apart.
I have the directions that came with the scull insert.
It tells you to remove the circular piece, the part that says
dyna wide glide on it. But there aren't any holes under it to put
the five fasteners through it and into the star plate that is now
attached to the bike with the single stock bolt.
I'm either a dumb *** or I just don't no how to articulate this
question.
Thanks

I think I know what you're saying...are you referring to the center ring that has the model bike written on it? If so, that is stuck on with glue...and I pretty much ruined mine taking it off. I didn't damage the football cover..but that ring is just a flimsy piece of metal. So when I took it off, it damaged easily...perhaps someone has a better way to remove it than just taking a screwdriver to it
And yes...you need to remove that to install any upgraded air cleaner insert. So..yeah..remove the piece that says "Dyna Wide Glide"....how to do it...hard to say. I just pryed mine off with a screwdriver. If you're not interested in keeping it, that'll work fine..just be careful not to scratch the actual "football".

Does this answer your question?
If not, I could post some pics of the football cover without that "circular" piece. Once your football cover has that removed, you can pretty much install any air cleaner insert...whether it's the 1 (stock) bolt setup...or the air cleaner insert + five bolt plate setup.
Hope this doesn't confuse you more.

Yes please post a picture of what it looks like with that ring off.
I don't really want to remove it if there arn't the five holes under it.

Thanks

There aren't five holes under it. There is only one hole and it is in the center of the football. Mount the five-pointed deal in the center hole with the stock bolt. Then mount the insert over it using the five screws that came with the 'star shaped' thingie. Make sure it is 'lined up' or your skull will be on crooked. You'll see what I mean...

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Now I get it, I thought the star with the five holes went on the back
and that some of the covers had a place to drill the five holes under
the the stock circle
The directions were not clear at all.
Thanks again

Wow, that was just painful reading it. Hopefully all went well. Now for the skull timing cover, derby cover, levers, handgrips, wheel weights, fuel gauge, ...
