OK here's my idea. I want to make an old school oil cooler out of a transmission cooler or power steering cooler. I'm going to use the intake hose going from the oil tank to the oil pump and just run new hose and have it just suck the oil throw it. I figured it would work the same as the oil coolers that mounts to the oil filter mount. But yeah I need some help finding a trans or PS cooler that would work. What Kinda car to I need to get one off of? So I'm not looking all day in the junk yard. Thanks in advance. next thing once I see what the cooler looks like is the mounting.
Jagg makes wonderful and efficient oil coolers for Harleys. There is no way you are going to out-engineer them. Why even try? Your oil cooler vs. theirs - from an aesthetic perspective - ain't gonna make a dime's worth of difference.
I was thinking junkyard cooler, since you're using rubber lines anyway; easily adapted. The trick of the thing would be to mount and make it look good. No reason the trans cooler wouldn't work; it's been done many times.
It behooves me to mention that it's odd to me...that no one has made an oil tank with fins or a cooler attached as part of the artwork. The return line would just go right into the tank. But I guess that makes too much sense? Or how about an oil filter cover with fins on the end? It could be chrome *(bling!)*and do most of the cooling.
Another thought I've had is using TEGS - they could attach to the back and bottom of the oil tank, and wire into the ignition. Under power, they get cold, and this would work when you're in traffic/parades/jams. They could also be on a thermostatic cutoff so they wouldn't work when the oil was cold.
