Pre-'06 FXD models (except FXDWG) have 39mm fork legs
Pre-'06 FXDWG have 41mm fork legs
'06-later models (including FXDWG) have 49mm fork legs
In '06 they discontinued the visor mounted headlight on Dyna models; but, continued its use with Sportsters ....
I am not sure what year the 39mm fork legs were introduced; but before that, there were 35mm fork legs on some of the earlier Super Glide and Sportster models ....
I believe '99 would have been a 39mm front end ....
What this means for most of you fellas is that if you have a pre-'06 FXD and want to go wide, you've got to either get special construction 39mm wide triple trees or change out the front end to go with 41mm fork legs ... I believe a 49mm front end could be adapted to pre-'06 as well ....
For '06 and later guys, you can just change to the Wide Glide triple trees and reuse your fork tubes ....
If interested... a couple more. Keep in mind I changed alot more than the front end. But you can plainly see the difference in a 49mm wide vs. a 39mm narrow.

Does anyone have the specs for the center to center measurement of the mid vs. wide trees? I need to have some spacers made to go from mid to wide. I know it is about 1.4" difference, but I need an exact spec to have the disk spacer and wheel spacers made.
Yep. Clearly my 99 FXD is like the narrow glide on the right.
Wow the mid looks a lot wider.
I assume the tubes are smaller on the older Narrow glides?
So if I wanted to change things, I would need new tubes in addition to the trees?
Thanks
Yep.. Do it, I upgraded my narrow to a mid and I love it. It looks right and not like a sportster front end stuck on a big twin. I got the 06' street bob midglide Trees/tubes/lowers from ebay for 400.00. You need a new midglide wheel and fender too.. Sold my narrow glide stuff and almost paid for the whole swap.
To get back in the wind, I found a sweet 2003 dyna in great shape i could afford. I don't like the Sportster front end. I do like the dual side by by side lighting available for the narrow forks. Should I sell the bike or get the wider front end for this one when I find one. The dynas handle so much different than my softtail. Johnny
