Default Progressive Shocks help

Been searching the forums but couldn't find the answer i was looking for.

I have a 2008 Street Bob. Was going to get the 11" 412's. I am 185 lbs. I will be riding from NY to LA (posted about this last month) in May. I wasn't sure if I should get the standard or heavy duty shock. I normally ride solo, so I was wondering if the Heavy Duty shocks would be too stiff without all the extra weight.

Anybody have any experience with this scenario? I found the 412's for $220 shipped.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Plenty of members who tried the Pro 11's said they are a harsh ride, probably due to the reduced travel. If you're doing a cross country trip and want some comfort then spend a little more and get a better shock.

I'd get the heavy duty, if you're stuck on the Progs

I have the 12" hd 412's and they work great for me. But if your in the 180lbs range I would recommend you stay with the standard 412. JMHO.

standard. HD too firm for a guy under 220.

I have the Standard 812's on mine and they are plenty stiff for me at 165.

As far as ride dont expect them to ride much better than stock though.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record....there is probablly no single worse choice in suspension for a guy going on a serious touring trip than 11 inch Progressive 412's. If your like me and just have to have Progressives, at least do 12 inchers with lowering blocks if the bike NEEDS to be slammed that low. Otherwise, your rides gonna be a harsh one. I mean, your talking thousands of miles here. Standards are fine for solo. Not so great for two up.

I was actually thinking of leaving them stock for the trip, which is prob a good idea at this point.

I do like the look of the black shocks. I'm sure it's not worth the trade-off in comfort.

I use the heavy duty 11 inch progressives. I love the profile of the bike with them on and I do like the stiffer ride. When going for twisty riding instead of local/bar hopping I just throw the stock shocks back on. Takes all of 5 minutes.

Can you get 11.5's for your model bike? Might be a good option. I went from 12.6 stock to 12" 412 HD's and love them. But I weigh over 200 lbs. It dropped the rear end plenty for me. If you want to lower the bike and are going to replace the shocks anyway, do it with the shocks, not lowering blocks. Lowering blocks change the angle of the shocks and could affect the ride or handling just as much as the wrong shock can. HD's might be a stiffer ride for you at 185. For me, they work well, much better than stock.
