Default Heelplate.

I think I've mentioned this before a while back - It must be the way I ride or sit on the bike because I always seem to leave great gobs of molten boot heel on the hot pipes. As makeshift measure I made up a plate to keep my heel away from there and it worked fine but looked pretty grotty.

So, this afternoon being a bit bored and just getting over a rotten bout of 'flu - the missus and my son think I've had Swine flu, I'm not so sure but it's been pretty rough! Anyway, I digress - with nothing better to do I decided to go out to the workshop and fabricate something a bit more aesthetically pleasing.

First stop was my office to play about on Corel Draw and throw some shapes together then print them out onto card then take them to the bike to see which looked best. To be honest, nothing I came up with looked particularly good, then I struck on the idea of replicating the shape of the turn signal re-location brackets I made a few weeks ago. I printed that onto some card, cut it out, tried on the bike and it looked quite good, so I went ahead and cut the shape out of 6mm (1/4") aluminium plate

I've just finished shaping it, & cutting holes etc. It needs some more polishing but I'll do that tomorrow and then mount it on the bike and post some more photos.

Great looking work! How/where's it going to mount? I've got the same issue (noticed today) - probably cause I'm spoiled from the floorboards on the Electra Glide - just not used to having to watch out for the pipes.

I can't do machining but if your idea works I might be able to find someone to replicate it.

Thanks!

Well that's pretty cool. It's so rare to see any fab work on this board.

I'll post a shot of it when it's mounted so you can get a better idea, it actually mounts on a S/Steel bracket I made which fits to the R/H footpeg bolt. I did have temporary one mounted down there as I mentioned above but I was a bit concerned about it vibing lose so I locked it up with blue Loctite and a nyloc nut. It never shifted in 800 miles so I'll do the same with this one.

As promised some pics of the heelplate that I made to keep my boot heel off the hot pipes is now finished & fitted. It could probably do with a bit more polishing but I've not decided yet whether to have it powder coated along with the turn signal brackets I made a few weeks back (which the heelplate matches) and the turn signal casings themselves.

I've included a pic of one of the rear turn signal mounts for comparison

Outstanding work! Glad to see someone creating their own solutions instead of relying on the Motor Co. Personnaly I wouldn't do it, cause I don't care about the cosmetic issues, but I really dig the workmanship!
