I made a side mount plate holder with an L bracket from the hardware store. The metal snapped at the bend in less than 1000 miles. I had the bracket mounted to the belt guard bolt. I would like to make or buy something that will last. I am looking at the brackets on ebay has anyone used one of these with lasting success? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Side-...QQcmdZViewItem
I don't have that exact mount, but do have a similar one from ebay that has cracked around the mounting bolt. I am now looking for something more robust and would not go with another thin metal mount like that. Mine lasted about a year before I noticed the crack. The other issue I had with that type of mount was it never stayed in one position.
That was just my experience, like a said, mine was different but the same basic design.
I've got the mount shown in the link above and its holding fine on the axle bolt for the 1000k its been on, probably would vibrate and snap soon if on the shock bolt. I've made some myself and they all vibrated or snapped.
Its not the best out there but it was cheap and I thought I'd try it since it was pretty heavy guage (1/8" steel) and already powdercoated.
You might also look at the ones by http://www.flyritechoppers.com/Pg/FRCParts.htmlwhich are pretty strurdy with reinforcement and only $60 (need light though or cut the top off). The best and toughest around in my opinionare by http://www.fabkevin.com/home.htmand though priced well are till a little more$$$ when you factor in painting or powedercoating it (them come raw) and then adding a light to it (of course you can go without and just use light bolts for tag illum.) I got a quote from Kevin for my MD plate which is 4 3/8 x 8 3/8 and without light(included mounting area for light) or powdercoating it was something like $200 shippedbut he has some starting at $79.
If my Road 6 mount snaps I may just go with Fabkevin next time around but for $26 shipped the Road 6 mount is a good buy, I may safety wire my tag though just incase .
I broke two home made side mounts then I said screw it and bought a Kuryakyn curved side mount and it's been on there since with no problems. I would suggest you just buy a Kuryakyn side mount, they offer several different ones. below are a few pics I took of my side mount and how it mounts to the swingarm, it's also adjustable at the pivot point so you can direct the plate holder up or down to your liking. it has six bright led lights built in so you'll be dot approved. excuse the pictures because my bike is filthy right now from riding home in the rain the other day.
The kuryakns are really nice especially the curved one. Only problem I had when looking to get one of those was they only make the straight one with the brakelight that work with large plates like MD has and I did not want the brake light.
Matt,
Wow thanks for the info. I am not sure what to do now. The price of the ebay holder is tempting but, I would like it to last though. I live in MD, but I chopped the plate down to the standard size.
I would not worry about it, just buy what you like and try it. I've seen all kinds and plenty of folks have had their mounts for a longtime and no breakage and I've even read of some with the Kuryakyns or the $300 ones snapping. There are lots of nice ones around for all kinds of $$ I just went cheap for now after failing at making one that would hold up.
I don't know how you managed to trim your plate to 4 x 7, I'd be missing like 2 numbers and my reg. stickers. I have seen some cool MD plates though that were 3-4 digit vanity plates trimmed to 3 x 6.
Where ya at in MD? I'm on the lower slower eastern shore in Crisfield bout an hr.+ from OC.
Here is a pic of the chopped MD plate. This one is on my wifes Dyna. I did the same size reduction to the plate on my streetglide which was a tag transfer from a road king. I have been running the cut down plate for five years without any hassles from cops.
