If you want to learn how to be a good rider, get a sporty. Youll build confidence in your riding abilities quicker.
The weight of the bike is only issue when your not moving. Your physical size does not have much to do with the size of the bike you can handle. Being big or small how no effect on how well youll be able to turn it.
Learn to ride 1 up before you do 2 up anyways.
Oh yea, and starting off on a RK not a food idea. 20K+ bike 1000lb+ for someone that took a class whos ONLY experience is riding a 250cc bike in a parking lot rarely getting out of 1st gear is disaster.
My wife has an 05 1200c , it is comfortable and very quick , handles great. I'm on my second Dyna , first was a Superglide , now a Wide Glide. I find the big twins easier to ride on long trips , and I prefer the torque advantage and lower center of gravity. If you can ride both , you can make a better choice.
I have a '95 dyna wide glide before that I had '83 electra glide. I taught my daughter ( she is 5'4" 105 lbs) to ride both. The wide glide is easier for her to ride
I'm a fan of the Dyna too - although to be honest I never even sat on a sporty. I did sit on a RK, and a Fatboy - both of which I thought were going to be the way I wanted to go. Then one day I sat on a 02 dwg with the 13.5" Mustang seat. Yummy.
So, I picked up a used DWG that feels perfect for my size and riding style. 6'4" and 270lbs.
I haven't gotten the missus behind me yet, but I have no doubt it will be just fine.
Later in life I may go to a RK, Street Glide or softail heritage (all with forward conrols) but for now this bike is everything I've ever wanted.
If I feel it lacks power 2 up - I'll get the 95" installed. Sounds like a plan.. Hmmm
I'm a first timer too, and was at the same crossroads as yourself (Dyna or Sporty?). I went with the Dyna an '06 Super Glide. Mainly because my friends told me that I would out grow a sportster in about 6 months (which one of them did exactly that). I am very happy with my Super Glide. I would say go for the Dyna! Things to think about...
'07 Dyna's have a bigger engine - that's a good thing
Maybe a Dyna with forward controls - 'cause your height
I could do without the bar mounted speedo - found on the Super Glide
Well good luck, I sure you will be happy with whatever you choose. I am 5'6" and 180lbs., and I don't have problems with the size of my bike other then having to get shorter rear shocks. Hope this helps. Ride Safe!
