Default Thoughts please.

I posted this in the Sporty forum, wanted to get the opinions from those with SuperGlides

I am entertaining the thought of getting an HD here in the next few months....I am new rider... 6'2 and 185lbs..

I am currently taking riding lessons from a good friend's grandfather along with taking a motorcycle safety course here in the near future. A motorcycle is a big decision, so I dont want to rush into anything and make a smart decision.

But I am curious as to what bike will suit my needs better? My use for the bike will be two fold I would guess. I can see myself doing as much distance riding as city riding along with some 2 up riding. I have been looking at and reading up on the Sportster 1200C and the Dyna Super Glide. Will I fit comfortably on Sportster? With being a new rider, will the Dyna might be too big/heavy of a bike?

Please guys and gals, be honest with me! I am very open minded to opinions and suggestions!

Thanks!

After you get your license go take a few demo rides and pick which one you like best.
The Glide with the new '96 inch motor would be my choice, it's not much bigger than the Sporty and will handle 2-up riding with ease.
And with the 6-speed tranny it'll be great on the highway.

Your concern is valid. many people chose the wrong bike for their situation. Demo rides are good but not entirely the answer. I think you are overly concerned about the weight of the bike. If the bike has a reasonably low seat height so your feet are firmly on the ground then the weight becomes much less an issue. If you are vertically challenged and feel like you are reaching to touch the ground then you probably won't like the bike long term. If you can easily touch the ground you will quickly and easily be able to handle heavier bikes.
Personally, I think a sportster would be a bad choice for two up riding and longer trips. Most people grow out of sporters in less then a year. Also, sporters seem top heavy. I own a dyna and for me it is a great bike but I ride solo. Your passenger may not find the superglide as comfortable as other choices. You could help that by investing in a good aftermarket two up seat. But I know this as a fact: if your passenger is not happy, you won't be happy.
If you are going to ride alot two up and do some trips you should atleast consider a roadking or road glide. Yes, they are a litlle bigger bikes but they are much better suited for what you want to do right off the showroom floor. They sit nice and low and they really aren't that much heavier. They do cost a little more, if that is a problem then you could consider a used one.
I have been riding for over 40 years and have found that 90% of the bikes on the market are not real good two up bikes. Yes they can all haul two people, but in most cases acceleration, stopping, and handling are compromised when you add a passenger.
Make sure your passenger is an eager paticipant in the sport before investing in a two up bike. I promise you that you will love the superglide for one up riding. Good luck.......CJ

The big complaints I hear about the sportsters are:

1. Not great for two-up riding.
2. The stock is not very comfortable and a good replacement is hard to find.
3. Potential for saddlebags or other storage is not very good.

Both bikes are great but I think there is a lot more potential for 2-up riding and lots of add-ons with the SuperGlide.

Get the biggest most expensive you can handle. I bought a
1200 custom a couple of years ago and a week later wished
I would have gone bigger. The sportster is a good bike but
I like long trips on the highway and felt the sportster beats
you up.

Super Glide [sm=smiley20.gif] With your size and wanting to do distance riding 2 up, you will be happier in the long run with the Dyna and so will your passenger. Not that the Sporty can't haul your azzes just fine, it can, but the Super Glide will do it better -- as in a smoother and more comfortable ride. You'll have to replace the stock solo seat (unless you get the Super Glide Custom which already comes with a 2 up seat, but it's probably not very comfy), so get something that's comfortable for your lady as well. Trust me on this. I rode on the back of my hubby's stock Wide Glide seat for a couple of years and had to make him take a pit stop many times because my butt was hurting so bad.

I've ridden both and I can tell you for what you want to do there is no contest....get the dyna.
I love sporty's and would love to have one in the garage next to my streeet bob just for fun and sport. But the dyna really is the minimum for being comfy with what you have said you're gonna do. I was in the same boat as you once and got the dyna-no sweat!

Go with the Dyna. I wouldn't mind having an old sporty in my garage either to play around with, but not for my everyday use. I faced the same decision when I was buying my first bike. I decided on the Bob (it wasn't that much more money) but I am super glad I did. It is a nice ride.
