Default need some advice see what you all think.

Ok taking some things apart on my 07 FXDC to do some maintenance bike does have extended warranty but i do all my own work. Doing tires, rotors, brakes, and good cleaning. that being said

I am removing the tank to run some wiring and i have 43,000 miles on it and i have have some issues with cut outs like i was loosing fuel. So my question is

Should i go ahead while i have the tank off pop the top off and replace the fuel filter and inspect the lines inside the tank that can get a hole in them or just leave it closed up and see what happens as i do have the extended warranty and if i pop it apart i will have to pay for the new seal and anything else i find wrong if anything in there. The fuel filters on me anyway as its not a warranty item so i guess id only be shelling out for the filter and the new tank seal.

Just thinking in my head i should do it now while iam basically there.

The 43k and tank off scenario sounds like a good time, if you don't mind spending the extra money. to do a little maintenance. I think the service manual recommends replacing the top plate seal each time the top plate is removed. I also believe they recommend replacing the screws.

When I changed my tank, I posted a question about replacing these items. The general consensus among those who responded, including Mud, was to re-use the seal once, but use new screws. That suited me well after I found the FXDI seal was like $50.00 by itself.

The problems you describe deserve a closer look, open her up.

OK, I have to ask... How do screws/bolts go bad? Having been involved in auto mechanics (primarily engine overhaul) starting many years ago, I have never seen this call to replace so many screws during routine maintenance. Screws don't go bad, it is more likely the hole they thread into would be worn than the screw itself. Maybe a chrome bolt, but not your typical bolts.
Just asking....

Each of the screws has an seal integrated with the shank and the base of the head. I took it that the recommendation to replace these screws was based on the chance of the seals already having been compressed may not do their job when reinstalled.

It may be more of a protection from liability issue for Harley by making this recommedation.

Skully,

I think you are on the right track with replacing the fuel filter. 43000 miles equals a lot of tanks of fuel and there is a lot of sediment in most fuels today even with filters at the pumps.
