I'm about ready to give up and just call it cruise control. It seems that no matter what I do my throttle will not turn freely.I know the cables aren't binding because it turns just fine until I tighten up the switch housing.I've lubed the cables and even sprayed WD40 under the grip to no avail.I also tried putting washers between the two half of the switch housing that didn't work either. This is a new set of powder coated Santee apes. Am I going to have to tear it apart again and sand off all the powder coating under the grip? Or take a high speed drill with a grinding drum and hollow out the grip a little?Which is likely to work? I've had this thing apart so many times I'm afraid I'm going to strip the threads in the switch housing.

well yeah, there should be no powdercoat on the grip area. sand it off smooth! be sure the throttle is 1/8" away from end of bars when reinstalling. I can't believe they powdered the grip area. It is Ok to leave powder under the housings though.

Rounder is right. Sand it then finish the sanding with a very very fine wet sand. You shouldn t have to use WD 40 or anything else. make sure your throttle lock is unscrewed as well. And like rounder said leave a 1/8 space away from the bar ends. Good luck and let us know how it goes. C

Yeah... check the little screw under the throttle housing... it looks like a little black plastic X. I was having the same problem when I put my new grips on and was getting frustrated as crap, and gave that **** a little twist... Magic... works like a gem now. now if I can get rid of this snow up here still...

Dammit, I already knew the answer.I'm just not in the mood for that project tonight.Guess I'll tear into it tomorrow and break out the old orbital sander.I don't suppose a chemical stripper will remove powder coat will it.

Also be sure the END of the bar is not rubbing the grip from the inside, you might have to slide the whole assembly about 1/16" to give it room to turn.

Permatex exhaust gasket remover kinda takes it off... depends on how good the job was. Check that throttle lock... As long as you can easily slide the throttle on and off before you put the cables on it,or spin it freely without the housing tightened, it's not the powdercoat...

I gotta disagree with that my throttle turns freely UNTIL I clamp down the switch housing around it.The bars I had on before were powder coated but the throttle area was bare metal. What a P.I.T.A why in the hell can't they just have a hard plastic sleeve for the throttle like every other motorcycle I've ever seen.

Sanding it is then... i can only assume you checked the friction adjustment screw?

I will second and third that, I don't have powder coated bars but I've had my grips on and off a number of times and I ran into your same dilemma by having the grip to far on the bars. Yea it would turn and release before tightening things down but the friction on the end plus tightening the screws down put just enough kink in the grip that when tight, I had custom cruise control too, except I didn't want it, lol. Backed it off the bar a hair, and bam, like butter.
Also make sure you do not use that wd40 down those cables. use a cable lube like dry slide.....
